MUSCAT — Oman on Thursday recorded 1,366 new cases of coronavirus and two more virus-related deaths in the last 24 hours, according to a statement from the country's Ministry of Health carried by Oman News Agency. This brings the total number of confirmed COVID-19 infections and fatalities in the Sultanate to 34,902 and 144 respectively. Among the newly detected cases, 680 are Omani citizens while the remaining 686 are expatriates from different countries. The ministry also announced that 548 more patients have recovered, raising the total number of recoveries in the country to 18,520. The Ministry also pointed out that it conducted 3,835 additional coronavirus tests over the past 24 hours. Out of a total of 417 coronavirus patients who are receiving necessary medical care in hospitals, 107 of them are in intensive care units. Meanwhile, addressing a press briefing on Monday Oman's Health Minister Dr. Ahmed Bin Mohammad Al-Saidi said that there is no indication that the opening of some commercial activities caused an increase in the number of new cases in the country. According to the minister, the reason for the increase in cases is the lack of compliance with preventive measures. He also said that more than 27,000 cases were recorded in one month. The minister added that if the number of cases increases, we may have to open field hospitals.
