RIYADH — Saudi Arabia has witnessed a considerable spike in internet usage following the implementation of the precautionary measures to prevent the outbreak of the new coronavirus in the Kingdom, Saudi Press Agency reported quoting a statement from the Communications and Information Technology Commission. The average daily consumption of data on mobile and fixed Internet services in the Kingdom jumped by 33 percent this month as against the month of February, the report added. According to the telecom service indicators with regard to the top five data-consuming applications, YouTube tops among the most data-consuming content platforms with an estimated 22.5 percent of the total daily data consumption in the Kingdom, followed by the Facebook with 8.1 percent while Playstation came third with 7.8 percent, Snapchat ranked fourth with 7.6 percent, and Netflix stood fifth with 6.2 of the data consuming content, according to the SPA report citing CITC statement. It is noteworthy that this increase in data consumption comes as a result of the increasing demand for internet services in the Kingdom as it implements a slew of precautionary measures and foremost among them are remote work, distance education, and operation of businesses in the private and public sectors through electronic services.
