Denmark denies Switzerland
Published in The Saudi Gazette on 27 - 03 - 2019

Denmark's Henrik Dalsgaard scored a 93rd-minute equalizer to complete an incredible comeback from three goals down as it drew 3-3 away to Switzerland in a Euro 2020 qualifier Tuesday.
The Swiss were on the verge of making it two wins out of two at the start of their Group D campaign but Dalsgaard outjumped goalkeeper Yann Sommer to head home and earn an unlikely point.
The home team broke the deadlock in the 19th minute when Remo Freuler beat goalkeeper Kasper Schmeichel with a cool finish for his first international goal.
Switzerland captain Granit Xhaka hammered home a 20-metre shot in the 66th and Breel Embolo made it 3-0 from close range 10 minutes later after Manuel Akanji headed across goal.
But Denmark astonishingly fought valiantly to secure a draw with goals by Mathias Jorgensen, substitute Christian Gytkjaer and Dalsgaard in the last 10 minutes.
In the other Group D game, Ireland beat Georgia 1-0 after Conor Hourihane beat keeper Giorgi Loria with a brilliant free kick to score his first international goal in Mick McCarthy's first home game since he returned as coach for a second spell.
Ireland, which battled to a 1-0 win away to rank outsider Gibraltar in blustery conditions in its opener Saturday, is top with six points.
Switzerland, which beat Georgia 2-0 in Tbilisi in its first match, is second with four points.
Ireland travels to Denmark on June 7, while the Swiss are not in qualifying action until they visit the Irish on Sept. 5.
Morata double
Spain's Alvaro Morata scored a goal in each half as they beat a highly defensive Malta side 2-0 away Tuesday to move top of their Euro 2020 qualifying group with two wins out of two games.
Spain coach Luis Enrique was absent from the sidelines as he had to return home for family reasons, so his assistant Robert Moreno took charge of the game, making eight changes from the side that had beaten Norway 2-1 Saturday.
Malta was happy to sit back on the edge of their area and defend for most of the game, but the visitors found a way through in the 31st minute when Morata latched onto a long ball and sent his shot squirming under goalkeeper Henry Bonello.
The Atletico Madrid striker sealed Spain's victory with another goal in the 73rd, drifting free of his marker to comfortably head in a perfectly-weighted cross from substitute Jesus Navas.
While Spain struggled to play free-flowing football, it had 80 percent of possession and never looked like conceding against a Malta side which showed little ambition in attack and only mustered two shots on goal to Spain's 23.
After two games Spain leads Group F with six points, while Sweden is second on four after drawing 3-3 away to Norway, which has one point. Malta is level on three points with third-placed Romania, while the pointless Faroe islands is bottom.
Meanwhile, Irish fans disrupted a Euro 2020 qualifier against Georgia by throwing tennis balls onto the pitch in protest at chief executive John Delaney's continued role in the Football Association of Ireland (FAI).
Play was held up for three minutes late in the first half while Ireland waited to take a free kick deep in Georgian territory as stewards cleared dozens of tennis balls thrown on to the pitch by fans angry at the FAI for moving Delaney sideways into a new role.
Conor Hourihane gave Ireland the lead in the Group D clash directly from the resulting free kick. The match finished 1-0.
Delaney is due to appear before lawmakers on April 10 to explain a 100,000 euro ($113,000) personal loan, provided to the FAI two years ago to help his employer with what it called a short-term cash flow issue.
Delaney's loan to the FAI, which did not appear in the FAI's audited accounts and prompted questions about the body's financial position, has been a major news story since the Sunday Times first reported it 10 days ago. — Agencies
