JEDDAH – Leading the charts with his latest release on Beatport, Jay Lumen is back with yet another chart buster “Get Yaa” and his new EP called “Play Cool The Old School EP.”
In an exclusive interview in the Middle East, for the very first time Lumen spoke to Saudi Gazette about techno, life and more. “Music is in my veins since my childhood years.”
Lumen is a versatile music producer deeply inspired by his love for classical music and is recognized in the international electronic dance music scene with his unique fusion of different genres.
In his DJ sets he builds from house, tech house, and techno style elements. When asked about how it felt to reach the number one spot for “Get Yaa” on Beatport, Lumen said: “It's really amazing of course. In the last year I had around four No.1 releases and tunes and it's so huge for me.
“By the way it's interesting as well as I started the year by a No.1 tune on Great Stuff Recordings just like in 2012 January so it's a deja vu a little bit, but I like this deja vu.”
Talking about the misunderstanding about techno music and electronic music genres, he said: “Honestly I don't like the categories for music. Nowadays the genres have no exact border lines and that's really good I think. Many people think that techno is just a hard drum loop plus bass line and that's all.
“But techno can be melodic, slow, light as well and you still call it techno. Personally I play on wide spectrum from deep, tech house to techno, mostly pumpy stuffs of course. In the old times the DJs called all of these EDM tunes for techno and I think its coming back.”
The concept of collaborating in EDM (electronic dance music) is trending all around the world.
Lumen said: “I have some special collaboration plans for the future just like in the last year with Gary Beck for Drumcode (Adam Beyer's label) for example. But let's keep them for surprise still.”
Discussing his dreams and goals, Lumen said: “I try to realize my dreams always.”
As a child he wanted to be a DJ who travels and plays a lot. “Because I loved and love the music and now I'm on this way. I don't call these dreams. I call them goals. But well my ultimate dream is to be in the music scene my whole life as I love music. It's an international language and a contact between people.”
Lumen said he is here to express and give some part of him by music to people. “Just share my ideas and feelings and I always hope that the people will like my DJ sets and tracks, that's all. I hope I can give experiences to the actual crowd and listeners as well.”
Talking about his new singles and his new EP, he said: “My next release will be out on 100% Pure which is a label I consider my second family.
The name of EP will be “Play Cool the Old School,” it's the second part of my Get Ready EP in style which was released last year. I hope you will like at as well as Get Ready before which was No.1 on the releases and No.2 on the tech house top chart.”
Talking about his future plans, Lumen said: “My schedule is so busy. I'll play at many places all around the world. A weekend in Spain, but this month in Space Miami (US) as well. After that in Germany, Hungary, Netherland, UK, India, Canada, etc… Just some of the countries I remember now. But I travel week by week so just check my Facebook for the actual dates. I always post the actual weekend parties on www.facebook.com/JayLumenMusic
Speaking to aspiring producers, Lumen gave a message that holds true to aspiration and achieving success. “Just love music and don't fallow the fashion.”
He said one should give to their songs what they possess and artist should try to find their own ways. “Don't follow the others and be patient.”
Lumen announced a three-stop tour in India “so we can meet there.”
