Isner ousted in first match at Memphis

MEMPHIS, Tennessee — Denis Istomin took advantage a sluggish John Isner to eliminate the third-seeded American 6-4, 6-3 Tuesday in the US National Indoor Tennis Championships.
Isner struggled through a number of unforced errors and at least a handful of double faults. Istomin of Uzbekistan, ranked 63rd in the world, broke Isner in the seventh game of the first set as Isner hit two shots into the net and sailed a backhand long in the game.
After gaining another break in the fifth game of the second set, Istomin won the set at love on Isner's serve, game point coming on a cross-court passing shot with Isner at the net.
The victory was Istomin's first win over a top-20 opponent since he defeated Fernando Verdasco of Spain, then ranked 18th, in the London Olympics last year.
Earlier in the day, fourth-seeded Sam Querrey of the United States defeated Alejandro Falla of Columbia 6-3, 6-3 to advance to the tournament's second round.
American veteran James Blake defeated German Florian Mayer 4-6, 6-3, 6-2. In the late match, fifth-seeded Kei Nishikori of Japan ousted qualifier Illya Marchenko of Ukraine 6-4, 7-5.
In the women's draw, third-seeded Sabine Lisicki of Germany defeated qualifier Madison Keys of the United States 7-5, 6-3 and seventh-seeded Magdalena Rybarikova of Slovakia beat American Lauren Davis 7-6 (2), 6-2.
Wawrinka in 2nd round
Third-seeded Stanislas Wawrinka of Switzerland defeated Paolo Lorenzi 6-3, 6-3 Tuesday to reach the second round of the Copa Claro clay-court tournament in Buenos Aires.
In a slight upset, No. 7 Pablo Andujar of Spain was beaten in the first round by countryman Albert Montanes 5-7, 6-2, 6-4.
In other first-round results on Tuesday, Julian Reister of Germany defeated Martin Alund of Argentina, 7-5, 6-1, and Tommy Robredo of Spain advanced against Gastao Elias of Portugal, 6-3, 6-0.
Spain's Daniel Gimeno-Traver defeated Dusan Lajovic of Serbia, 6-4, 7-5, Leonardo Mayer of Argentina won over Simone Bolelli of Italy, 5-7, 6-2, 6-3, and Andrey Kuznetsov of Russia beat Filippo Volandri of Italy, 7-6 (5), 6-3.
Llodra beats Goffin
In Marseille, Michael Llodra beat David Goffin of Belgium 6-2, 6-4 to reach the second round of the Open 13 Tuesday and set up a rematch of last year's final against defending champion Juan Martin del Potro.
Ernests Gulbis of Latvia also faces a tough test against top-seeded Tomas Berdych after comfortably seeing off Finland's Jarkko Nieminen 6-3, 6-2.
Hiowever, fifth-seeded Richard Gasquet was upset by Gilles Muller of Luxembourg, losing 2-6, 6-4, 7-6 (5).
India's Somdev Devvarman also pulled off an upset as he beat Paire 7-6 (6), 6-7 (7), 6-4.
Fellow Frenchman Gael Monfils also lost, 6-4, 6-4 to Marcel Granollers of Spain.
Meanwhile, Nikolay Davydenko beat Sergiy Stakhovsky 6-2, 4-6, 6-2, and Roberto Bautista-Agut defeated Filip Krajinovic 4-6, 7-6 (5), 6-0. — Agencies
