Sydney FC wins on late Emerton goal

SYDNEY — Brett Emerton scored in the 89th-minute to give Alessandro Del Piero's Sydney FC a 1-0 win over A-League leader Central Coast Mariners Thursday. The win lifted Sydney out of last place and into ninth, a point ahead of the Melbourne Heart. Later Thursday, Perth substitute Nick Ward scored an 87th-minute equalizer for a 1-1 draw against the Western Sydney Wanderers.
The Wanderers appeared headed for their fourth straight win after Labinot Haliti's 38th-minute strike gave them the lead against the run of play. But Ward's powerful volley off a Ryo Nagai cross earned the home side a point. — AP
