There are sizable Kurdish populations in Iraq, Turkey, Iran, Syria, Armenia and Azerbaijan. Numerous attempts to establish independent Kurdish states have been largely unsuccessful. Even successful attempts have been short-lived. In many countries where Kurds reside, restrictions have been put on the use of the Kurdish language and other elements of Kurdish cultural identity, all in an attempt to quash any separatist leanings. __
