Bartoli thru at Pan Pacific Open
Published in The Saudi Gazette on 25 - 09 - 2012

TOKYO — Marion Bartoli of France advanced to the second round of the Pan Pacific Open Monday with a 6-1, 6-4 win over local favorite Kimiko Date-Krumm, who had to deal with the distraction of a rowdy fan.
After dominating the first set, the ninth-seeded Bartoli faced a tougher challenge from Date-Krumm, who came back from a 3-1 deficit in the second set.
“Playing her in Japan is a tough challenge,” Bartoli said. “I expected her to fight to the end. I knew she would make a comeback in the second set and she did but that forced me to stay focused.”
Date-Krumm, who turns 42 Thursday, closed the gap to 5-4 but was undone by two unforced errors in the last game when she was forced to contend with a loud intoxicated supporter.
“I heard it and found out after the match there was a drunken fan,” Date-Krumm said. “Maybe he was cheering for me but it was distracting and broke my concentration on some big points. It's too bad something like that can happen.”
In other matches, 11th-seeded Ana Ivanovic of Serbia advanced when Andrea Hlavackova of the Czech Republic was forced to retire with a left thigh injury with the former top-ranked Serb leading 6-3, 2-0. Urszula Radwanska of Poland coasted to a 6-2, 6-4 win over Japan's Kurumi Nara, while 17th-seeded Nadia Petrova of Russia downed China's Peng Shuai 6-1, 6-4. The 2010 French Open champion Francesca Schiavone of Italy edged past Yaroslava Shvedova of Kazakhstan 4-6, 7-6 (7/4), 6-4.
American Jamie Hampton, Pauline Parmentier of France, Sweden's Johanna Larsson, Simona Halep of Romania, Tamira Paszek of Austria and Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova of Russia also advanced.
Petzschner wins in Thailand
Philipp Petzschner advanced to the second round of the Thailand Open by beating Peerakiat Siriluethaiwattana of Thailand 6-1, 6-2 Monday.
The 107th-ranked Petzschner, who last played in Bangkok in 2009, took less than an hour to win the only singles match of the day.
The four highest seeded players — Janko Tipsarevic of Serbia, Richard Gasquet of France, Milos Raonic of Canada and Gilles Simon of France — received byes in the first round.
Pospisil advances, Melzer hurt
In Malaysia, Vasek Pospisil of Canada advanced to the second round of the Malaysian Open Monday after eighth-seeded Jurgen Melzer of Austria pulled out with a left leg injury, while trailing 6-4, 2-0.
Pospisil will face Michael Yani, who defeated Brian Baker 6-3, 7-6 (4) in an all-American match. In other first-round action, Igor Sijsling of the Netherlands ousted Malaysia's top-ranked player, Ariez Elyaas Deen Heshaam, 6-2, 6-1. He will face either Feliciano Lopez or Lukas Lacko of Slovakia. — Agencies
