Hatim Al-Masoudi Okaz/Saudi Gazette MAKKAH — No one has come forward so far to claim a two-year-old boy found abandoned under a bridge in the Al-Misfala district of Makkah by a patrol team more than six weeks ago. The police have not been able to locate the child's family. The identity of the child, believed to be of African origin, remains a mystery as no police station in the city has received complaints related to a missing child. Zaki Al-Rehaily, spokesman for Makkah police, said despite issuing circulars and notifying the public about the child through the media, no one has come forward to claim him. The patrol team, which picked up the child on the fourth day of Ramadan, handed him over to the Ajyad police station. The Social Affairs Department turned down a police request for sheltering the child as he was not Saudi. Now officers at the police station are contributing to meet the child's needs. Col. Abid Al-Gathami, director of Ajyad police station, said a team was formed to find the child's family. The members of the team have contacted several African communities with little success. Col. Al-Rehaily said abandoned foreign children are referred to the anti-beggary department. After the procedures are completed, the child will also be handed over to the concerned authorities if no one comes forward to claim him.
