Teixeira heroics lift Yankees
Published in The Saudi Gazette on 15 - 07 - 2012

NEW YORK — Mark Teixeira homered twice and drove in five runs, Russell Martin hit a go-ahead single and the New York Yankees overcame yet another homer by Mark Trumbo to rally past the Los Angeles Angels 6-5 Friday night.
Teixeira's three-run shot and Martin's two-out single in the eighth inning overcame the Angels' 5-2 edge.
Trumbo homered in his fifth straight game against the Yankees, a three-run shot in the seventh.
Scott Downs (1-1) relieved to begin the eighth with an 0.30 ERA this season. Derek Jeter led off with a double, Curtis Granderson walked and Teixeira hit the first homer off Downs this year.
Chad Qualls (1-0) got his first win with the Yankees.
Indians 1, Blue Jays 0: Justin Masterson pitched seven sharp innings, Travis Hafner homered and Cleveland beat the Blue Jays.
Vinnie Pestano worked the eighth and All-Star closer Chris Perez finished for his 25th save in 27 chances save as the Indians wrapped up their sixth shutout of the season.
Hafner provided the only run Cleveland would need when he led off the second with a towering drive to right off Ricky Romero (8-5), his eighth. Masterson (6-8) gave up just five hits, all singles. He walked one and struck out five.
Red Sox 3, Rays 1: David Ortiz [stats] hit his 23rd homer and Pedro Ciriaco had three hits and drove in two runs, helping the Red Sox [team stats] beat the Rays.
Franklin Morales (2-2) allowed two hits over five scoreless innings to win for the second time since the left-hander was moved into the starting rotation last month. The left-hander walked three and struck out five before being replaced by Scott Atchison, who yielded an unearned run in the sixth.
Ortiz hit a solo homer off Jeremy Hellickson (4-6) in the first inning to extend his hitting streak to a season-best eight games.
Tigers 7, Orioles 2: Miguel Cabrera and Jhonny Peralta homered, Doug Fister pitched seven innings of three-hit ball and Detroit beat the Orioles for its sixth straight victory.
Brennan Boesh had two RBIs for the Tigers, who moved three games over .500 (45-42) for the first time since April 24, when they were 10-7. Fister (3-6) gave up one run, struck out eight and walked none to earn his first road win in seven tries this season.
Orioles starter Jason Hammel (8-6) left in the fourth inning with a right knee injury. After throwing a pitch to Boesh, Hammel came off the mound awkwardly. He took a few practice throws before being removed by manager Buck Showalter.
Athletics 6, Twins 3: Jonny Gomes' grand slam helped the Athletics overcome a career-high 15 strikeouts from Francisco Liriano and beat the Twins.
Liriano's 15 strikeouts were the second most in Twins' history and most since Johan Santana fanned 17 Texas batters at the Metrodome on Aug. 19, 2007.
Other results: Chicago White Sox 9, Kansas City Royals 8; Texas Rangers 3, Seattle Mariners 2. — Agencies
