Three for ‘yes' and two for ‘no' ... a code for passing
Published in The Saudi Gazette on 28 - 07 - 2008

A very loud chorus is heard of many voices reciting and echoing the letters of the alphabet in an otherwise quiet environment. A voice in the background is heard saying to the group assembled, “Very good, but watch your pronunciation”. The voices pause and begin once more in unison. The voices of every age are eager to learn are willing to cooperate. Education in any form of endeavor, if administered correctly, provides individuals with the opportunity of achieving success for himself or herself in the future.
Growth is forwarded for the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. Education empowers students to implement what they have learned to all areas of the Saudi economy whether it be private or corporate. Education and learning provides a beacon of light where there used to be darkness.
However, if education is administered incorrectly or without professional passion, the result is distortion and misleading information, which can flaw the system of education in the Kingdom. The teacher in the classroom must be knowledgeable in all areas of language.
We have all experienced education in schools in one form or another since childhood. It is the cornerstone for building structure on which to build in years to come.
The responsibility of the student in the classroom is to focus on the subject at hand and not to wander off into whatever is happening out of the window. He or she must not be concerned as to how much was paid by the student to his left to colorful sandals, nor be concerned with where he or she will meet for lunch after class. These distractions will not help him or her as to how to spell M I S IS I PPI ….It is the student who must arrive in the classroom on time, and it is only the teacher who will end the class.
During a quiz or an examination, the teacher must be aware of student body language helping students in the ‘art' of cheating. One student or another will slowly become active by moving his arms, hands and fingers in what seems to be an odd manner. His hand will move to his sides, his head or other parts of his body. Suddenly, three or two fingers will be raised for other students to clearly see. These are code body language signs for a ‘yes' or a ‘no' to answers on the exam itself… cheating at a technical body language level which the teacher as monitor must catch and punish.
Even in the case of an experienced instructor, if he or she is caught off guard by an odd or confused question by a student, the teacher must never respond with an “I don't know”. The instructor must think the question over carefully and then respond to the student and to the classroom, “We are going into that exact topic in the next period, please be patient…”
At the very next break, the teacher will go to the teachers' room and consult with the teachers and or consult a required textbook, find the answer and be prepared with confidence to make a vigorous answer. Ask the classroom, “Are there any other questions?” This maneuver by the instructor displays professionalism together with competence. __
