Sarfraz to lead SCC in ACC Elite Trophy
Published in The Saudi Gazette on 22 - 07 - 2008

Sarfraz will lead Saudi Cricket Center (SCC) in the ACC Elite Trophy to be played in Kuala Lumpur from July 25 to Aug. 3.
The 14-member squad, including two Saudis Abbas and Ahmed, was announced by Nadeem Nadwi, the newly appointed Chief Executive of SCC. The team, selected by the National Selection Committee of SCC, headed by Qasim Naqvi and selectors representing all regional cricket associations, is believed to be the best combination of experience and youth. The selection committee has included two members - Hussain Anwar and Ijaz Sagheer - from the victorious U-19 side, which won the ACC Challenge Cup in December 2007 in Thailand.
A prominent player of Yanbu Al-Sanaiya Cricket Association (YACA) Sarfraz is the most experienced player of Saudi Arabia. He has been a member of all 7 SCC teams that participated in the ACC organized cricket tournaments. Shafiq Ahmed, highest scorer of WPCA in the last season, will be his deputy.
The team, comprising players from WPCA, YACA, MCL and EPCA, is sponsored by My Care Medical Center. Nidal Khan of Al-Hala International School, is appointed as the team manager. Pakistan's ex-Test cricketer Mansoor Akhtar will be the coach and Tapas Chattopadhyaya of IISD will be the physio.
The squad: Sarfraz Ahmed (captain), Shafiq Ahmed (vice Capatain), Suharab K. Ali, Asif Shamshad, Kashif Riaz, Hamad Saeed, Mohammad Amjad Ali, Khalid Mehmood Butt, Abid Naseem, Hussain Anwar, Abbas Saad, Ahmed Saad, Sajjad Hussain and Eijaz Sagheer.
SCC has arranged a three-day conditioning camp and a practice match in Kuala Lumpur to provide an opportunity for the players to acclimatize.
The ACC Elite Trophy 2008 is being organized by the Malaysian Cricket Association under the auspices of Asian Cricket Council (ACC).
The tournament will feature top 10 countries of Asia, other than Test playing nations. Saudi Arabia is in Group A with UAE, Bahrain, Afghanistan and host Malaysia, while Hong Kong, Nepal, Singapore, Qatar and Kuwait are in Group B.
Saudi Arabia plays its first match on July 75 against the UAE. __
