Alex Ovechkin scored at 1 minute 35 seconds of overtime after Troy Brouwer had two goals in the final three-and-a-half minutes of regulation, giving the host Washington Capitals an improbable 3-2 win over the Islanders Tuesday night. Shut out by the Islanders' Evgeni Nabokov for 56 minutes, the Capitals mounted a stunning rally to win their third in a row. Brouwer cut the deficit to 2-1 with 3:29 left, scoring from the right of the net after taking an excellent crossing pass from Mathieu Perreault. Then, after the Capitals pulled goalie Michal Neuvirth, Brouwer deflected a shot by Brooks Laich past Nabokov with 25.5 seconds to play. In overtime, Ovechkin entered the Islanders zone from the left side and fired a wrist shot from the top of the left circle into the back of the net. The Capitals moved past Winnipeg into the eighth spot in the East. Senators 1, Bruins 0: Robin Lehner stopped 32 shots for his first career shutout and Erik Karlsson scored for Ottawa, which won for the sixth time in seven games and moved to 1 point behind host Boston atop the Northeast Division. Lehner, 20, appeared in his 11th NHL game, starting because Ottawa's regular goaltender, Craig Anderson, is sidelined indefinitely after cutting his hand in a kitchen accident. Coyotes 2, Canucks 1: Mike Smith stopped 39 shots, Ray Whitney scored in the third period and during a shootout, and host Phoenix extended its point streak to 12 games. Red Wings 5, Blue Jackets 2: Henrik Zetterberg's goal broke a 2-2 tie in the third period, and he added an assist to help visiting Detroit end a three-game skid. Panthers 5, Maple Leafs 2: Mike Santorelli scored twice for visiting Florida. Toronto lost for the ninth time in 10 games. Elsewhere it was: Kings 4, Wild 0; Hurricanes 4, Predators 3; Lightning 2, Canadiens 1; San Jose 1, Philadelphia 0.
