Davis heroics steer Athletics past Yankees
Published in The Saudi Gazette on 17 - 06 - 2017

Khris Davis blooped a two-run, walk-off hit with the bases loaded in the bottom of the 10th inning, leading the Oakland Athletics to an 8-7 victory against the New York Yankees Thursday.
Davis hit a soft fly to shallow center off Giovanny Gallegos (0-1) that went off the glove of second baseman Starlin Castro, who tried to make a diving catch. Jed Lowrie went 3-for-5 with a solo home run and a triple for the A's. Yonder Alonso had two hits, including a solo home run.
Castro hit a tiebreaking sacrifice fly with the bases loaded in the top of the 10th inning.
Tigers 5, Rays 3
Miguel Cabrera's first home run since May 20 went just over the fence into the seats in right field with one out and one on in the ninth inning to give Detroit a victory over Tampa Bay.
Reliever Tommy Hunter (0-2) gave up a one-out single to Alex Avila in the ninth and pinch-runner Andrew Romine watched halfway between first and second as Cabrera's high fly ball on a 97 mph fastball went into the seats. It was Cabrera's sixth home run this season and seventh career walkoff.
Rockies 10, Giants 9
Raimel Tapia stroked a walk-off single to right field with one out in the ninth inning as Colorado blew a 9-1 lead before defeating San Francisco.
Mark Reynolds led off the ninth with a single against Hunter Strickland (1-2). Ian Desmond fouled out. Pinch hitter Carlos Gonzalez walked on four pitches, setting the stage for Tapia, who went 2-for-5 with two RBIs after going 4-for-4 on Wednesday.
Phillies 1, Red Sox 0
Ty Kelly hit a pinch-hit one-out RBI double in the eighth inning to spoil Chris Sale's strong outing as Philadelphia snapped an eight-game slide.
Kelly's double scored Andrew Knapp, who singled with one out. Pat Neshek (2-1) picked up the win while Hector Neris earned his sixth save. Nick Pivetta threw seven shutout innings and struck out nine batters — both career highs.
Brewers 6, Cardinals 4
Eric Thames' two-run homer in the ninth inning lifted Milwaukee over St. Louis.
Thames lined an 0-2 pitch from Seung Hwan Oh (1-3) just over the wall in right field for his 18th homer of the year. It scored pinch-hitter Jesus Aguilar, who singled with one out to start the rally.
Nationals 8, Mets 3
Gio Gonzalez and Daniel Murphy continued their mastery of New York as Gonzalez tossed seven strong innings and Murphy collected three hits and two RBIs in Washington's rout.
Gonzalez (6-1) allowed two runs on five hits and no walks while striking out five over seven innings as he improved to 13-5 with a 2.94 ERA in 22 career starts against the Mets. He also added an RBI single Thursday.
Indians 12, Dodgers 5
Lonnie Chisenhall had a home run and five RBIs, and Jose Ramirez had three hits and drove in a pair as Cleveland pounded Los Angeles.
Edwin Encarnacion and Erik Gonzalez also went deep for the Indians, with Gonzalez's blast serving as his first career homer. Encarnacion, who reached base five times on three hits, a walk and a hit-by-pitch, scored a career-high-tying four runs.
Twins 6, Mariners 2
Chris Gimenez hit two home runs for his first career multi-homer game, and Jose Berrios continued his strong sophomore season with a career-high eight innings pitched as Minnesota defeated Seattle.
Gimenez drove in four runs, while Eduardo Escobar had three hits, including a homer, as the Twins split the four-game series and remained two games ahead of Cleveland in the American League Central before the teams start a four-game series on Friday.
Royals 7, Angels 2
Lorenzo Cain and Alex Gordon hit solo home runs as part of a 15-hit attack as Kansas City won its season-high fifth straight game.
The Royals continued their offensive surge with 31 hits in a two-game sweep of the San Francisco Giants earlier this week. Kansas City has hit 14 home runs during the five-game winning streak and scored 42 runs, a far cry from April when it averaged 2.7 runs per game while starting the season 7-16.
White Sox 5, Orioles 2
