MAKKAH — The General Administration of Roads in the Municipality of Makkah has carried out a major campaign to repair roads and streets leading to the Grand Mosque, especially in view of the large number of visitors and pilgrims during the holy month of Ramadan.
The campaign is supervised and implemented by a number of specialized technical and engineering teams and human cadres.
Director General of Roads Zuhair Bin Abdul Rahman Soqat said the municipality has formed a number of field teams, which include Saudi engineers and technicians with high experience and qualified contractors, to follow up on the maintenance of road networks, tunnels and bridges and all facilities 24 hours a day. The teams supervise all repair activities while ensuring the free movement of visitors and pilgrims.
Director of the Department of Road Maintenance Walid Al-Hakami said the municipality teams inspect all roads and streets to ascertain the quality of the roads and to make them safe for everyone.
He pointed out that a large number of field teams are deployed in high seasons like Ramadan to ensure the safety of roads, identify maintenance needs and immediately address them.
A number of potholes have been repaired and improvements have been made in several streets. The amount of asphalt used for the repair work has reached about 350 tons. Additionally, a number of recently adopted traffic decisions have been implemented. These decisions contributed significantly to the dismantling of traffic jams, renovation of the tunnels and roads used to transport pilgrims and visitors from designated points to the Grand Mosque and back.
Al-Hakami stressed that the campaign is being implemented in various sites. The field teams will continue examining all neighborhoods to identify the requirements of road maintenance and remove all obstacles that distort their appearance.
