Blue Jays fly past Orioles to avoid 3-game sweep
Published in The Saudi Gazette on 23 - 05 - 2017

Marco Estrada tied a career high with 12 strikeouts, Devon Travis homered, and the Toronto Blue Jays avoided a three-game sweep with a 3-1 victory over the Baltimore Orioles.
Estrada (3-2) allowed one run and five hits with a walk in 7-2/3 innings. Jonathan Schoop committed an error on a routine grounder by Kendrys Morales with two outs in the first that proved costly for the Orioles.
Yankees 3, Rays 2
Brett Gardner's two-run homer in the top of the second inning lifted New York over Tampa Bay. Gardner took the first offering from Chris Archer (3-3) and sent the pitch over the right field wall to give the Yankees a 3-1 lead. Didi Gregorius tied the score earlier in the inning with an RBI single that scored Jacoby Ellsbury.
Yankees starter CC Sabathia (4-2) gave up a two runs (one earned) while striking out six in five-plus innings. Three Yankees relievers combined for four no-hit innings, with Dellin Betances getting the last four outs for his second save.
Pirates 1, Phillies 0
Aaron Nola yielded four hits in seven innings and the lone run of the game when he hit David Freese with the bases loaded in the sixth inning as Pittsburgh edged Philadelphia.
Chad Kuhl left with a no-decision but pitched five shutout innings, giving up one hit. Wade LeBlanc (3-0), Juan Nicasio, Felipe Rivero and Tony Watson preserved the shutout.
Angels 12, Mets 5
C.J. Cron's grand slam powered a five-run first inning for Los Angeles in its win over New York. The Angels led 5-0 before recording an out in the first against Tommy Milone (1-2), who allowed a leadoff single to Cameron Maybin and a double to Andrelton Simmons before intentionally walking Mike Trout.
Milone then walked Jefry Marte to force home a run before Cron homered deep into the left field seats for his second career grand slam. The Angels chased Milone in the second, when Trout crushed a two-run homer to center immediately before Marte homered to left.
Nationals 3, Braves 2
Stephen Strasburg (5-1) pitched 7-2/3 innings, striking out a season-high 11, and allowed two runs, both coming in the eighth inning, to continue his dominance against Atlanta, in Washington's win. Koda Glover worked 1-1/3 innings without allowing a run for his third save.
Washington opened the scoring in the second inning when Daniel Murphy hit a long solo homer. It was Murphy's second homer of the series and his third in the last four games. The Nationals added two unearned runs in the third inning.
Rockies 6, Reds 4
Colorado collected four homers, including one by pitcher Kyle Freeland to beat Cincinnati. Carlos Gonzalez hit his 200th career home run in the fourth inning, Freeland added his first career homer in the fifth, and DJ LeMahieu and Pat Valaika also went deep off Bronson Arroyo. LeMahieu went 4-for-5 with a double and homer.
Cardinals 8, Giants 3

Wainwright (4-3) also turned in his second straight quality start, allowing one run and five hits in 6-1/3 innings with three walks and six strikeouts.
Royals 6, Twins 4 (1st game)
Brandon Moss homered twice among three hits to support Jake Junis' first major league start, and Kansas City powered past Minnesota in the first game of a doubleheader.
Salvador Perez and Jorge Bonifacio each hit two-run homers for Kansas City.
Twins 8, Royals 4 (2nd game)
Robbie Grossman, Max Kepler and Chris Gimenez each homered for Minnesota, and rookie Adalberto Mejia pitched seven strong innings as the Twins beat the Kansas City Royals to gain a split of their doubleheader. Grossman and Kepler each hit two-run homers in the first inning as Minnesota recovered to take the second game after losing 6-4 in the opener.
Indians 8, Astros 6
Yan Gomes followed his run-scoring double in the second inning with a three-run homer in the third, leading Cleveland over Houston and a series sweep. Gomes finished 2-for-3 with five RBIs, including his third homer of the season.
Cubs 13, Brewers 6
Kris Bryant hit two home runs and reached base safely in all five of his plate appearances as Chicago cruised past Milwaukee. Ben Zobrist and Anthony Rizzo also homered as the Cubs scored in every inning except the second.
Red Sox 12, Athletics 3
Left-hander Eduardo Rodriguez pitched eight strong innings and Mitch Moreland hit a two-run homer, lifting the Boston Red Sox to a 12-3 victory against the Oakland Athletics. Rodriguez (3-1) allowed three runs on six hits in his second career start against the A's.
Padres 5, Diamondbacks 1
Left-hander Clayton Richard threw a complete-game five-hitter and drove in a run with a single as the San Diego Padres defeated the Arizona Diamondbacks. The lone blemish against Richard was a solo homer by Arizona catcher Chris Iannetta with one out in the third inning.
White Sox 8, Mariners 1
The Chicago White Sox scored five first-inning runs and went on to defeat the Seattle Mariners. Left-hander Derek Holland pitched eight strong innings and Tim Anderson homered for Chicago. Holland (4-3) allowed one run on six hits and two walks. He struck out six, including the side in his eighth and final inning.
Dodgers 6, Marlins 3
Adrian Gonzalez had three hits and drove in three runs, and Brandon McCarthy retired the first 14 batters and threw six sharp innings as the Los Angeles Dodgers beat the Miami Marlins. Yasmani Grandal also had three hits for the Dodgers, who finished with 12 hits, seven for extra bases.
Rangers 5, Tigers 2
Yu Darvish maintained his perfect record against Detroit as Texas won for the 11th time in 12 games. Darvish improved to 7-0 against the Tigers by allowing two runs and five hits in five innings. Mike Napoli and Pete Kozma hit solo home runs for Texas. — Reuters
