Food carts turn students and staff into investors

Many Saudi employees and students are investing in the sale of mobile food carts in Jeddah, according to a report in Al-Madina newspaper.
Mohammed Al-Buqami, director of public relations at Jeddah municipality, said that spaces for the sale of mobile food carts are permitted free of charge to owners selling food using carts. He added that licenses for the practice of the profession do not exceed SR200 and can be obtained within 48 hours in case conditions set by the municipality are met.
He added that there are no specific age requirements for any gender and that the municipality had set 3 days, Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays of each week, as the point of sale at the Jeddah Corniche and the rest of the days in the designated areas next to ‘Aya Mall.'
Ahmed Abulkhair, medical student, said: «I and two of my brothers decided to start a small business selling crepes and waffles on a food cart,» pointing out that the idea was proposed by friends, who praised their products. He said that their friends liked the way they prepare food and it should be marketed.
He continued: «My brother and I take shifts in the preparation of food processing requirements on the cart. We work daily for nearly five hours and this project has brought them satisfactory profit."
The municipality has laid out the conditions as such:
Permitted activities: Sale of vegetables and fruits, munchies (Sandwiches, potatoes, tea, coffee and the like)
Places prohibited: The parking of the carts in front of schools and homes.
Within neighborhoods: In dusty and unpaved places and near unhygienic containers
Eligibility: To be a Saudi national, male or female and they should be not less than 18 years old. They also need a health certificate to prove that the products are free of infectious diseases. License from sub-municipal sections that's valid for one year and renewable
The design of carts: Length shall not exceed 1.5 meters and not less than one meter. It should be made of aluminum, and acetylcholine, white color with blue corners and hinges, roughly comparable to the colors of Jeddah Municipality logo. IT should bear the number of cart and its license and the hotline for the municipality in case of complaints.
