Pens defeat Caps in wild game
Published in The Saudi Gazette on 18 - 01 - 2017

Evgeni Malkin recorded a hat trick, and Conor Sheary scored his second goal of the game in overtime as the Pittsburgh Penguins erased a three-goal deficit and ended a three-game losing streak with an 8-7 win over the Washington Capitals Monday.
Washington, the top team in the NHL, had its winning streak dashed at nine games. Pittsburgh improved its league-best home record to 19-2-2.
Sheary's winner came 34 seconds into overtime as the puck went in off the skate of Washington defenseman Matt Niskanen during a scramble in the crease.
Islanders 4, Bruins 0: Thomas Greiss stopped 32 shots for his first shutout of the season, and Nikolay Kulemin scored twice in a three-goal second-period outburst to lead New York past Boston.
Greiss, pulled from his last start Saturday night at Carolina, turned in his second strong performance in Boston this season. He has stopped 80 of 82 shots on Boston's home ice.
Sharks 5, Jets 2: Martin Jones made 26 saves for his 22nd victory of the season, and San Jose rolled to a victory against Winnipeg.
Joel Ward, rookie Timo Meier, Brent Burns, Chris Tierney and Joe Thornton scored for the Sharks, who ended their two-game losing streak. Jones made 11 of his saves in the first period, turning away a handful of prime chances.
Backup goaltender Michael Hutchinson made his second straight start for the Jets and allowed four goals on 31 shots. He made 35 saves in a 3-2 overtime loss to the Los Angeles Kings on Saturday.
Sabres 4, Stars 1: Playing for the first time since Nov. 7, Tyler Ennis scored 19 seconds into the game to lead Buffalo to a win over Dallas.
Ennis missed the previous two months after undergoing groin surgery.
Eichel had two goals and McCabe also scored for the Sabres, who snapped a two-game losing streak. Robin Lehner made 31 saves.
Red Wings 1, Canadiens 0: Jared Coreau made 18 saves for his second shutout as Detroit bested former Hart and Vezina Trophy winner Carey Price and Montreal.
Coupled with Saturday's 6-3 win over the reigning Stanley Cup champion Pittsburgh Penguins, it's the first time Detroit has won back-to-back home games since Oct. 22-25.
Coreau improved to 5-1-1 since his Nov. 26 recall from Grand Rapids of the American Hockey League.
Lightning 2, Kings 1: Brian Boyle and Tyler Johnson each scored a goal as Tampa Bay edged Los Angeles.
The Lightning won for the second time in three games after a four-game losing streak. Ben Bishop made 31 saves.
Los Angeles had a two-game winning streak snapped and is 3-3-0 on its current homestand. The Kings dropped to 14-5-2 when scoring first and Peter Budaj stopped 27 Tampa Bay shots.
Oilers 3, Coyotes 1: Edmonton topped Arizona in regulation at home for the first time since Nov. 23, 2009.
The Oilers finally broke the 14-game curse as Jujhar Khaira's first-ever NHL goal stood up as the game-winner, and Cam Talbot made 20 saves for his 23rd victory of the season.
