Wozniacki in quarters
Published in The Saudi Gazette on 22 - 09 - 2016

Former champion Caroline Wozniacki outlasted fourth-seeded Carla Suarez Navarro 7-6 (4), 4-6, 6-4 to advance to the Pan Pacific Open quarterfinals Wednesday.

Wozniacki won four of five break points in the nearly three-hour match at Ariake Colloseum.

"We played for such a long time and ... the standard was very high," Wozniacki said. "Luckily, I'm the one here, and I'm happy to get through."

Wozniacki will meet either Yulia Putintseva or Magda Linette in the quarterfinals.

Second-seeded Agnieszka Radwanska also faced a major challenge but prevailed over Barbora Strycova of the Czech Republic 6-3, 3-6, 7-5.

Radwanska will next face Monica Puig, who rallied to upset 2013 champion Petra Kvitova 1-6, 6-4, 6-4.

The Puerto Rican, who also beat Kvitova on her way to becoming the Rio de Janeiro Olympic champion, recovered from 4-2 down in the final set. She saved 10 of 13 break points.

Japanese wild card Naomi Osaka beat sixth-seeded Dominika Cibulkova of Slovakia 6-2, 6-1 to set up a quarterfinal with either Karolina Pliskova or Aliaksandra Sasnovich.
Wawrinka back on court
Stan Wawrinka is back on court after winning the US Open, and he's kept up his winning ways.

The Swiss world No. 3 needed just 57 minutes to win 6-3, 6-1 against Czech player Lukas Rosol in the second round of the St. Petersburg Open Wednesday after receiving a first-round bye.

Wawrinka said "it was a great level from myself for the first one" and that he felt "really focused" against Rosol, who is ranked 85th.

Wawrinka next plays one of two Serbians, either seventh-seeded Viktor Troicki, who beat Portugal's Gastao Elias 6-1, 6-2 in the first round earlier Wednesday, or the unseeded Dusan Lajovic.

Also Wednesday, eighth-seeded Joao Sousa of Portugal won 3-6, 6-4, 7-5 in the first round against Moldovan qualifier Radu Albot.
Larsson, Giorgi and
Arruabarrena in last 8
In Seoul, Second-seeded Johanna Larsson of Sweden reached the Korea Open quarterfinals by stalling Kateryna Kozlova of Ukraine 6-3, 1-6, 6-2 Wednesday.

Larsson overcame a mid-match hurdle to dispatch Kozlova, who has risen more than 60 spots in the rankings this year, and set up a quarterfinal with Lara Arruabarrena of Spain, who beat eighth-seeded Louisa Chirico of the United States 4-6, 7-6 (4), 7-6 (2).

Camila Giorgi of Italy rallied from a set down to defeat Mona Barthel of Germany 2-6, 6-1, 6-4 for the second time in a month.

The win put Giorgi into her fifth WTA quarterfinal of the year. She will face China's Zhang Shuai, who edged past US Open doubles champion Bethanie Mattek-Sands of the United States 6-3, 7-5.
Golubic reaches quarters
In Guangzhou, Viktorija Golubic advanced to the quarterfinals at the Guangzhou Open by beating top-seeded Sara Errani 6-7 (7), 6-3, 6-4 Wednesday.

The 23-year-old Swiss will next face Anett Kontaveit of Estonia, who beat Zhu Lin of China 6-1, 3-6, 6-0.

Defending champion Jelena Jankovic, third-seeded Ana Konjuh, fifth-seeded Alison Riske, Jennifer Brady, Lesia Tsurenko and 2013 Wimbledon finalist Sabine Lisicki also advanced.
Lestienne suspended for betting
French tennis player Constant Lestienne has been suspended for seven months and fined $10,000 for gambling on tennis, the Tennis Integrity Unit announced Wednesday.

The 24-year-old — presently at a career-high ranking of 164 — placed bets on 220 tennis matches, none involving him, in a three-year period from February 2012 to June 2015.

The TIU softened the blow by suspending half his period of the ban — so long as he commits no other offenses — and offered him the olive branch of considering half the fine paid if he cooperates with them.

"A TIU investigation secured evidence to confirm that between February 2012 and June 2015, he (Lestienne) placed bets on 220 tennis matches through online accounts with Betclic and Pari Mutel Ubain," read the TIU statement.

"The investigation was supported by information provided by the Autorité de Regulation des Jeux en Ligne (ARJEL), the French online gambling regulator.

"None of the bets placed involved matches in which Mr. Lestienne was playing.

"The suspension applies with immediate effect and means the player is not allowed to compete in, or attend, any tournament or event organized or sanctioned by the governing bodies of the sport." — Agencies
