Orioles close in on 1st place
Published in The Saudi Gazette on 01 - 09 - 2016

Matt Wieters hit a two-run home run in the bottom of the eighth inning, giving the Baltimore Orioles a 5-3 victory over the Toronto Blue Jays.
The Orioles (72-60) pulled within three games of first-place Toronto (75-57) in the American League East race.
Brad Brach (8-2) got the victory thanks to 1-1/3 innings of scoreless relief. Zach Britton came on the ninth and earned his 39th save.
Nationals 3, Phillies 2: Trea Turner collected two hits and helped back a strong outing from starter Max Scherzer in a 3-2 win over the Philadelphia Phillies.
Scherzer (15-7) was near-untouchable early and merely terrific late as he pitched eight innings, gave up two runs on three hits and a walk.
He struck out 11 to hit the double-digit strikeout mark for the 12th time this season, a franchise record.
Tigers 8, White Sox 4: JaCoby Jones had two hits and knocked in two runs in his major league debut and Ian Kinsler drove in four runs, powering the Detroit Tigers to an 8-4 victory over the Chicago White Sox.
Jones, whose contract was purchased from Triple-A Toledo earlier in the day, drove in the go-ahead run with a sixth-inning double and added an RBI single the following inning.
Kinsler supplied a two-run homer and two-run single, while J.D. Martinez had three extra-base hits, including a solo homer.
Todd Frazier hit his 33rd homer for the White Sox. Matt Albers (2-6) was charged with the loss after giving up three runs in one-third of an inning.
Mets 7, Miami 4: Jose Reyes collected four hits and Curtis Granderson hit two homers -- one as a pinch-hitter and one after remaining in the game as the right fielder -- as the New York Mets beat the Miami Marlins 7-4 in a battle of National League wild-card contenders.
The Mets (68-64) have won eight of their last 10 games to move ahead of the Marlins (67-65) in the NL East.
The two teams began 2-1/2 games behind the St. Louis Cardinals in the race for the second NL wild-card spot.
Indians 5, Twins 4: Jason Kipnis and Rajai Davis homered and the Cleveland bullpen pitched seven scoreless innings as the Indians beat the Minnesota Twins.
Cleveland trailed 4-1 in the second inning as starter Josh Tomlin only recorded five outs before being removed from the game.
Dan Otero pitched 2-2/3 hitless and scoreless innings, while Andrew Miller got the last five outs of the game to pick up his 12th save.
Braves 7, Padres 3: Julio Teheran struck out eight and walked none over seven innings in a 7-3 victory over the San Diego Padres that ended an eight-start winless streak.
Teheran (4-9) allowed a two-run homer by Oswaldo Arcia, but just five other hits while lowering his ERA slightly to 3.12.
Teheran came in getting a major league-worst 2.9 runs of support per game, but the Braves scored five times in the third inning while ending the game early for Padres starter Edwin Jackson (3-5).
Rays 4, Red Sox 3: Evan Longoria hit his 30th career home run against Boston to snap a 3-3 tie in the eighth inning as the Rays came from behind to stun the Red Sox.
Luke Maile tied the game with a two-run shot off Boston starter Drew Pomreanz with two outs in the seventh.
Clay Buchholz (5-10) then served up Longoria's 21st homer of the year.
The shot made a winner of reliever Enny Romero (2-0), who worked a perfect seventh with two strikeouts. Erasmo Ramirez pitched a perfect eighth and Alex Colome the ninth for his 29th save.
Cubs 3, Pirates 0: Right-hander Kyle Hendricks scattered three hits over seven shutout innings as the Chicago Cubs beat the Pittsburgh Pirates.
Hendricks (13-7) struck out four and walked one before Carl Edwards blanked Pittsburgh in the eighth and closer Aroldis Chapman worked a one-two-three ninth for his 31st save of the season.
Rangers 8, Mariners 7: Rougned Odor was 3-for-5, including a walk-off, two-run home run in the bottom of the ninth in the Texas Rangers' 8-7 comeback victory over the Seattle Mariners.
Other results: Astros 3, Athletics 1; Cardinals 3, Brewers 1 (10 innings); Yankees 5, Royals 4 (10 innings); Angels 4, Reds 2; Diamondbacks 4, Giants 3. — Reuters
