Burnley, Middlesbrough bow out
Published in The Saudi Gazette on 26 - 08 - 2016

Premier League clubs Burnley and Middlesbrough were eliminated by lower-division sides in the second round of the League Cup Wednesday, while Leicester and Chelsea were paired in the standout match of the third round.
Fourth-tier Accrington pulled off the biggest shock of the night, beating Burnley 1-0 thanks to a goal late in extra time by Matty Pearson.
Second-tier Fulham came from a goal down to beat Middlesbrough 2-1, with Lasse Vigen Christensen getting the west London team's winner in extra time.
Sunderland needed a late goal from on-loan Manchester United midfielder Adnan Januzaj to beat third-tier Shrewsbury 1-0, while Bournemouth settled for a 2-1 win at fourth-tier Morecambe.
Januzaj fired a rising shot into top corner in the 83rd minute to avoid any potential upset for a Sunderland side that has lost both its opening Premier League games under new manager David Moyes.
Marc Wilson scored Bournemouth's winner in the 54th minute in his first match for the club since joining from Stoke.
Clubs who are involved in European competition join the competition in the third round, the draw for which was made Wednesday.
Manchester City will start its defense of the English Football League Cup with a third-round trip to fellow Premier League side Swansea.
City won the competition last season under Manuel Pellegrini with a penalty shootout victory over Liverpool after a 1-1 draw in the final at Wembley.
Now managed by Pep Guardiola, City received a bye to the third round due to its participation in the Champions League and, on the day it defeated Steaua Bucharest 1-0 to clinch its place in the group stages of Europe's elite club competition, the League Cup draw sent it to the Liberty Stadium.
City's rival Manchester United will travel to third tier giant-killer Northampton, which shocked West Bromwich Albion in a penalty shoot-out after a 2-2 draw in the second round Tuesday.
Chelsea faces an intriguing clash at Premier League champions Leicester, while Arsenal visits second tier Nottingham Forest.
Liverpool takes on second tier Derby at the iPro Stadium and Tottenham hosts third tier Gillingham, which enjoyed a 2-1 win at Premier League Watford in the second round.
Fourth tier Accrington's reward for its 1-0 second-round win against Premier League Burnley is a trip to West Ham.
Fulham, which defeated top-flight Middlesbrough 2-1 in the second round, takes on Bristol City.
