Rangers down Bruins 3-2 in OT
Published in The Saudi Gazette on 23 - 01 - 2012

Marian Gaborik scored twice, the second on a third-try backhander with 3.6 seconds left in overtime, and the New York Rangers beat the Boston Bruins 3-2 Saturday in a matchup of the top two teams in the Eastern Conference.
Henrik Lundqvist made 32 saves for the Rangers. Ryan Callahan also scored for the Rangers, who tied Chicago with 64 points – most in the NHL. Tuukka Rask stopped 30 shots for the Bruins, who played most of the overtime down a man, 4-on-3, after Andrew Ference drew a five-minute major for boarding defenseman Ryan McDonagh and was ejected.
Flyers 4, Devils 1: Scott Hartnell scored two power-play goals, and Wayne Simmonds had a goal and two assists, leading the Philadelphia Flyers to a victory over the New Jersey Devils.
The Flyers (28-14-4) remained four points behind the Eastern Conference-leading New York Rangers. The Devils (26-19-2) lost for the second straight time in the middle of a six-game homestand.
Hartnell scored in the second and third periods. His first goal came off a deflection, and his second – the 22nd of the season – came off a one-timer that eluded goalie Martin Brodeur.
Ducks 2, Senators 1: Jonas Hiller made 31 saves, Corey Perry scored, and Lubomir Visnovsky was credited with a goal that Ottawa's Erik Karlsson knocked into his own net during the Anaheim Ducks' victory over the Senators.
The Ducks (17-22-7) are 7-0-1 in their last eight and 10-9-3 since Bruce Boudreau took over for fired coach Randy Carlyle on Nov. 30.
Craig Anderson made 27 saves for the Senators, who got their only goal at 8:51 of the third period. Chris Neil, playing in his 700th NHL regular-season game, converted his own rebound after Nick Foligno set him up from behind the net.
Canucks 4, Sharks 3: Cody Hodgson scored his second goal of the game with 4:17 left, and the Vancouver Canucks beat the San Jose Sharks.
Ryan Kesler and David Booth also scored for Vancouver (29-15-4), which is 1-1-1 halfway through its six-game homestand.
Logan Couture scored a short-handed goal and added a power-play tally, and Dan Boyle also had a goal for the depleted Sharks (26-14-5), who were without top-six forwards Martin Havlat (hamstring) and Ryane Clowe (facial injury) and lost their second straight.
Red Wings 3, Blue Jackets 2, SO: Valtteri Filppula scored in the fourth round of a shootout to give the Detroit Red Wings their 16th straight home victory, over the Columbus Blue Jackets.
Islanders 2, Hurricanes 1, OT: John Tavares scored his second goal of the game 3:58 into overtime, and the New York Islanders beat the Carolina Hurricanes for their third straight win.
Canadiens 3, Maple Leafs 1: Carey Price made 32 saves, and Rafael Diaz and Lars Eller scored third-period goals in the Montreal Canadiens' victory over the Toronto Maple Leafs.
Rene Bourque also scored for the Canadiens, coming off a 5-4 loss in Pittsburgh on Friday night.
Other results: Florida 4, Winnipeg 3; St Louis 4, Buffalo 2; Nashville 5, Chicago 2; Tampa bay 4, Phoenix 3; Minnesota 5, Dallas 2; Calgary 6, Edmonton 2; Colorado 3, Los Angeles 1.
