Zverev boosts reputation with Goffin shock
Published in The Saudi Gazette on 30 - 04 - 2016

Fast-rising German teenager Alexander Zverev enhanced his reputation further Friday when he knocked top seed David Goffin out of the Munich Open with an impressive 6-3, 4-6, 6-3 win.
Zverev, 19, currently ranked a career-best 49 in the world, secured victory in the quarterfinals in two hours and 22 minutes to move into his fourth career semifinal.
Zverev next faces Austrian third seed Dominic Thiem who made the semifinals of the claycourt event with a 6-4, 4-6, 6-3 win against Ivan Dodig of Croatia.
The 22-year-old Thiem, ranked 15 in the world, is now tied with world No. 1 Novak Djokovic for most tour-level wins this season (28-7).
Bacsinszky in Grand Prix SAR final
In Morocco, top-seeded Timea Bacsinszky of Switzerland beat fifth-seeded Timea Babos of Hungary 6-4, 7-5 Friday to reach the Grand Prix SAR final, where she will face qualifier Marina Erakovic of New Zealand.
Bacsinszky, ranked 15th, broke Babos' serve six times in their first meeting since 2010 and now goes for her fourth career title.
A French Open semifinalist last year, Bacsinszky will be playing in her seventh final and her previous title was at Monterrey, Mexico last year.
Earlier, Erakovic beat 2012 champion Kiki Bertens 2 -6, 7-6 (7), 7-5 in a topsy-turvy match featuring 15 breaks of serve and 11 double faults.
Erakovic, ranked 186h, reached her first clay-court final and her fifth overall.
Her only title was three years ago at Memphis on an indoor hard court.
Tomic stunned
In Istanbul, top-seeded Australian Bernard Tomic was left waiting for his first European claycourt win of the season when he slumped to defeat to Argentina's Diego Schwartzman at the Istanbul Open Thursday.
World No. 23 Tomic lost his opener in Bucharest last week and struggled again in Turkey, losing 6-2, 6-2 to world number 87 Schwartzman in 64 minutes.
"I feel great here," admitted Schwartzman, who lost to eventual champion Roger Federer in last year's semifinals. "I'm playing well on these courts, which are slow. I tried to be focused today and I think I played a great match."
Schwartzman goes on to face Bosnia's Damir Dzumhur, who beat Illya Marchenko 6-3, 5-7, 6-3, for a place in the semifinals.
Ivo Karlovic recorded the 300th match win of his career when the 36-year-old beat Dusan Lajovic of Serbia 7-6 (13-11), 7-6 (9-7).
The giant Croatian, seeded at three, next faces fifth-seeded Marcel Granollers of Spain, who defeated Hyeon Chung of South Korea 6-3, 6-4.
