New Glenn Miller painting for British eatery
Published in The Saudi Gazette on 23 - 04 - 2016

When a well-known British company commissioned a Welsh artist to produce a painting, he was given just one week to create a masterpiece.
Bert Evans from Port Talbot received the commission from JD Wetherspoon through his membership of Creative Coverage, which represents selected professional artists and craftspeople.
Bert sketched out a series of designs featuring American band leader Glenn Miller, who was billeted to Bedford in 1944. After emailing them over to the client it was not long before one was selected. "On the Monday I was told, the work, which had to measure 800mm x 600mm, had to be completed by Friday evening, when it was to be collected," he reveals. "Wednesday and Thursday was taken to complete the work and the result emailed to the client ensuring that it didn't clash with the planned décor. The piece has been given the title ‘Stompin' at the Savoy' and I am very pleased with it."
He adds: "Although my love is painting, music is a constant source of inspiration; gypsy jazz and the swing era, in particular. This project was a real labour of love for me."
Earning a reputation as a figurative painter, Bert's work can be seen in galleries throughout south and south west Wales and further afield. Now visitors to The Pilgrim's Progress in Bedford, England can also appreciate his work.
Bert's work can be seen in various galleries including The Kemble Gallery, Durham and most recently Harbour Lights Gallery in Pembroke following a Creative Coverage introduction.
Bert Evans studied painting at Newport under the guidance of people such as Selwyn Jones and Jack Crabtree. "In my paintings, I never set out to consciously to make the everyday special but I realise the things that I notice and find interesting are often overlooked by others," says Bert. "So if I can persuade others to look again and share my enthusiasm a little, then I feel I've achieved something. Moreover, it's the effect of light on a subject that really drives me into the studio each time. Working with a limited palette of colours and economy of strokes helps me to achieve things simply and directly." Bert exhibits in several galleries in south and south west Wales.
