A Saudi student won a gold medal at the European Girls' Mathematical Olympiad (EGMO) 2016 representing the Kingdom in Busteni, Romania. The European Girls' Mathematical Olympiad is an international mathematics competition similar in style to the International Mathematical Olympiad, with two papers taken on consecutive days. Participating countries send teams consisting of four female mathematicians of school age. A source said the student Shaden Al-Shammary won a gold medal for the first time in the Kingdom's history at the EGMO that was held from April 10-16. The top 15 are awarded gold medals. "Shaden Al-Shammary from Hail won 15th place among competitors from 39 other countries. Students Joud Tawfiq Saleh from Yanbu and Renad Abualjamal of Jeddah won bronze medals," said the source. The source also said the Minister of Education Ahmed Bin Mohammed Al-Issa congratulated the Saudi female students and praised them for their achievement. "The minister was proud to have the Saudi female students accomplish such an unprecedented achievement. It is an honor for the Kingdom to win 15th place in such a prestigious event," said the source. The source also said the student Shaden Al-Shammary was congratulated by Hail Education Affairs Director Yousef Al-Thuwaini. "Shaden has previously won a bronze medal at the GMO in Belorussia only a few months ago, a gold medal in the Fourth Gulf GMO held in Kuwait and the gold medal at the Third Gulf GMO in Oman in 2014," said the source.
