World Civil Defense Day: Be safe not sorry
Published in The Saudi Gazette on 04 - 03 - 2016

Saudi Gazette
Heroes are those who risk their lives every day to protect our world and make it a better place – they are the reason why society survives. They are brave people like firefighters, police and our armed forces.
Firefighters save hearts and homes, police makes you feel safe, and the armed forces are the strength of any country. They protect your country and people. They are called the Civil Defense. Saudi Arabia celebrated World Civil Defense day on March 1 by organizing more than 600 different events throughout the country. Many schools and colleges arranged activities and events to mark this special and one-of-a-kind day. The main idea behind the event was to inform people about civil defense, and how people can get value them.
The day featured different types of problems that people can face any day. For example, fire is something that we all should know about. It can be very dangerous as it causes serious burns and sometimes death. Always make sure that you know the emergency exits. It is important that the person of in charge of dealing with fire safety at school or office should check for things that might lead to accident or people getting hurt.
During 2013, in America almost 334 children died in home fires. Fire looks tempting as it can flicker and burn with all its might, but you should never play with it. As a kid you should always have an adult with you even if it is the kitchen of your own house. Learn how to use the things in kitchen appliances in a safe way. Never use the matches if you are not under the supervision of an adult.
If you are the eldest in your family, it is your responsibility to keep an eye on your siblings who might forget to switch off any appliances like iron, stove, and oven among others.
Check for smoke alarm in your house. If it's not there – inform an adult to get it installed.
Take active part in fire drills during the school routine. It will teach you how to get low and out when you hear the alarm.
Blow out candles before going to sleep.
Dark nights and thunderstorms can also cause fire you should know how to keep yourself safe. Stay indoors as birds, bunnies and other animals find a safe spot during the thunderstorm.
Get out of pool, sea or any body of water as it can conduct electricity.
Don't get struck by lightning – although it's rare but it is possible.
If it is raining heavily – don't go out; stay indoors and have fun with your family.
Use emergency phone numbers if you see the real trouble – pick up the phone and call 998. They will come in no time.
However, remember prevention is better than cure – Try to be safe not sorry!
