Zibanejad stars as Senators rally to stun Kings
Published in The Saudi Gazette on 18 - 01 - 2016

Mika Zibanejad scored a tie-breaking power-play goal with 6:50 to play, and the Ottawa Senators roared back from a two-goal deficit in the third period for a 5-3 victory over the Los Angeles Kings Saturday.
Bobby Ryan and Jean-Gabriel Pageau scored 26 seconds apart earlier in the third as the Senators stunned the Pacific Division leaders and All-Star goalie Jonathan Quick with three goals in just over five minutes.
Alex Chiasson also scored and Mark Borowiecki added an empty-net goal.
Craig Anderson stopped 30 shots for Ottawa, which won for just the third time in nine games.
Zibanejad set up Ryan's goal with a sharp pass before putting the Senators ahead during a four-minute power play created by Nick Shore's high-sticking penalty.
Jeff Carter and Tyler Toffoli each had a goal and an assist in the Kings' second regulation loss in 10 games since Christmas. Quick made 18 saves while losing in regulation for the first time in 11 starts since Dec. 14.
Vincent Lecavalier scored his first goal for the Kings, and Anze Kopitar had an assist shortly after finalizing an eight-year, $80 million contract extension.
The Slovenian center has been Los Angeles' leading scorer in each of the last eight seasons, providing stellar two-way play for the two-time Stanley Cup champions.
Carter scored his 100th goal for the Kings in the first period, and Lecavalier scored on a loose puck in the second.
The veteran center got his 412th NHL goal and his first since joining the Kings in a trade with Philadelphia last week. Lecavalier plans to retire this summer, but he's fitting in well as Los Angeles' third-line center, playing the Kings' two-way style and excelling on faceoffs.
Toffoli made it 3-1 on an exceptional centering pass from Milan Lucic early in the third, but the Senators then took charge.
Ryan got a tap-in goal off a fine feed from Zibanejad, and Pageau evened it with his 10th goal on the next shift after Jake Muzzin misplayed the puck for Los Angeles.
Oilers 2, Flames 1 (SO): Teddy Purcell scored the winner in the shootout as the Edmonton Oilers snapped a four-game losing streak with a 2-1 victory over the Calgary Flames.
Mark Fayne scored in regulation for the Oilers (18-23-5), who had lost their previous seven games at home to Calgary.
Sam Bennett had the goal for the Flames (20-20-3), who have lost three of their last four games.
Sharks 4, Stars 3 (overtime): Tomas Hertl scored 1:12 into overtime to give the San Jose Sharks a 4-3 win over the Dallas Stars at SAP Center.
San Jose stretched their winning streak to five.
Marc-Edouard Vlasic assisted on Hertl's winner after scoring two goals in the game for the first time in his career.
Rangers 3, Flyers 2 (SO): New York goaltender Henrik Lundqvist continued his storied career against the Philadelphia Flyers by lifting the Rangers to a 3-2 shootout win at Wells Fargo Center.
Lundqvist was sensational — especially in overtime — and stopped all three shots in the shootout. Mats Zuccarello won it for the Rangers (24-15-5) with the only goal in the shootout.
Blues 4, Canadiens 3 (OT): Jori Lehtera scored 2:04 into overtime to give the St. Louis Blues a 4-3 win over the Montreal Canadiens.
Blues goalie Brian Elliott made a career-high 46 saves. The 49 shots were a season high against the Blues.
Senators 5, Kings 3: Mike Zibanejad and Bobby Ryan each had a goal and an assist as the Ottawa Senators defeated the Los Angeles Kings 5-3.
Ottawa (21-18-6) climbed to within one point of the second wild card spot in the Eastern Conference. Goaltender Craig Anderson stopped 30 Los Angeles shots for the win.
Other results: Sabres 4, Capitals 1; Blue Jackets 2, Avalanche 1; Devils 2, Coyotes 0; Bruins 3, Maple Leafs 2; Predators 3, Wild 0. — Agencies
