RIYADH — Saudi Arabia issued verdict against 47 terrorists in exercise of its full sovereignty, which is respected by international law, and in enforcement of its national laws and judgments issued by criminal courts based on Shariah, the Ministry of Interior announced here on Saturday.
Earlier on Saturday, 47 criminals were executed in Riyadh, Makkah, Madinah, Eastern Province, Qasim, Hail, Northern Border, Asir, Jouf, Najran, Baha and Tabuk after they were convicted by the judiciary and the sentences were endorsed by Appeal and Supreme Courts; and a royal order was issued to execute the sentences.
The executions took place in 12 cities, four prisons using firing squads and the others carried out executions with the sword, said Ministry of Interior Spokesman Maj. Gen. Mansour Al-Turki in a joint press conference with Adviser and Spokesperson of the Ministry of Justice Sheikh Mansour Al-Ghaffari.
Of those executed, 45 were Saudi citizens, one was from Chad and another was from Egypt.
The convicted criminals were found guilty of committing a variety of terrorist attacks and crimes such as targeting civilians as well as military and security personnel, military and security bases, diplomatic and consulate missions and their personnel.
Al-Ghaffari said the verdicts went through full legal procedures.
The ministry established a special court to look into terror crime cases.
It also granted the defendants the option to hire one lawyer or more.
The case went through 13 judges, he said, adding that no death sentence was issued against women accused of terrorism.
The Kingdom strongly believes that the crime of terrorism (called banditry under Islamic law) is a heinous crime against humanity and a major source of instability and a great threat to national and international peace and security, said an Interior Ministry statement, adding that the Saudi government leaves no efforts to combat terrorism and deter those who try to get involved in such acts.
Ministry of Justice spokesman Sheikh Mansour Al-Ghafari said a specialist court set up in 2008 has looked into 2225 cases against 6,122 people accused of terrorism. Of these, 55 were sentenced to death and 104 appealed against the verdicts. The court acquitted 163 and compensated them with over SR15 million. Some 243 defendants with provided with lawyers.
