Ideological terrorism
Published in The Saudi Gazette on 22 - 12 - 2015

Al-Madina
Everyone can see that we are suffering due to ideological classification by some members of society. Their aim is to exclude the others using any means available, including gagging them or depriving them of their freedom of expression. A person finds one group branding the other as ‘secularist' or ‘liberal' while another group accuses others of being ‘Takfiri' or ‘extremist' or other ideological classifications that cause discord in our society.
This ideological classification affects even officials appointed to some post, if information is available on them during his work or afterwards. A systematic campaign then begins against him in an attempt to exert pressure on him and influence him so that his decisions are in conformity with their ideology or current opinion. The matter might even reach people demanding that he be relieved of his post, just a few days after he was appointed.
During the past, we have seen how systematic campaigns against an official at all levels can be carried out. They can use attacks in the media in general and on social media in particular. Not only this, but the matter might reach visiting the official in his office or sometimes criticizing him in public gatherings. The aim is to impose a certain ideology on the official, irrespective of his productivity or his ideas being beneficial to the Kingdom. All that is of concern to them is that the official's approach and decisions ought to be in conformity with one particular ideology. This is a disaster when a particular ideological current is concerned only with imposing its agenda and ideas on the official by force and terror. They lodge a complaint or request an audience with rulers in order to discuss this official. The aim is to win certain personal gains, irrespective of the public's interest.
It is usually expected that an official, whether in a ministerial post or otherwise, will have a plan to develop his sector to best serve the citizens and the nation. However, the pressure that is being imposed on him prevents him from making important decisions and that will cause us to lag behind. We will never develop. We will never develop.
Therefore, it is important for the official to carry out his plan so as to serve all. He should not change his plans and decisions to please one segment of society at the expense of the other. As a result, he will digress from achieving what is required from his plans. His decisions will remain scattered, as he is out to please all current opinions. The harm of such an approach to citizens and the nation is greater than any so-called benefits.
