Avalanche blanks Blackhawks
Published in The Saudi Gazette on 17 - 12 - 2015

Patrick Kane's point streak ended at 26 games as the Colorado Avalanche beat the Chicago Blackhawks 3-0 in the NHL Tuesday.
Colorado goaltender Semyon Varlamov stopped all 29 shots he faced as the Blackhawks (17-11-4) were shut out for just the second time this season. Kane compiled 16 goals and 24 assists during his 26-game streak, a franchise record and the most by any American-born player in NHL history.
Kane's streak was the longest in the league since Hall of Famer Mats Sundin scored at least one point in 30 consecutive games with the Quebec Nordiques during the 1992-93 campaign.
Rangers 4, Oilers 2: Left winger Rick Nash scored the go-ahead goal late in the second period as the New York Rangers ended the Edmonton Oilers' six-game winning streak with a 4-2 victory at Madison Square Garden.
The Oilers had three power-play chances to tie the game in the third period but failed to convert.
Flyers 4, Hurricanes 3 (OT): Goalie Michal Neuvirth and the Philadelphia Flyers did enough to cool off the Carolina Hurricanes for a 4-3 overtime win.
Neuvirth, the NHL's save percentage leader (.939) coming in, kept Carolina at bay after the Hurricanes had scored five goals in each of their previous four games.
Left winger Jeff Skinner scored a hat trick to give him nine goals in the last six games, but the Hurricanes (12-14-5) could not find production from any other source.
Stars 5, Blue Jackets 1: Dallas Stars center Tyler Seguin scored two goals 30 seconds apart late in the second period and goaltender Kari Lehtonen stopped 34 of 35 shots in a 5-1 win against the Columbus Blue Jackets.
Defensemen Johnny Oduya and Alex Goligoski and center Mattias Janmark also scored for Dallas (23-6-2), which remains the lone team in the NHL yet to lose consecutive games this season.
Sharks 3, Canadiens 1: The San Jose Sharks made the most of their chances, snapping a six-game losing streak with a 3-1 road win against the Montreal Canadiens.
Centers Patrick Marleau, Joe Pavelski and Dainius Zubrus scored for San Jose while right winger Dale Weise scored for Montreal (20-9-3). Goaltender Martin Jones made 26 saves for the Sharks (15-14-1).
Lightning 5, Maple Leafs 4 (OT): Center Vladislav Namestnikov scored in overtime to give the Tampa Bay Lightning a comeback 5-4 road win over the Toronto Maple Leafs.
Right winger Nikita Kucherov, defenseman Anton Stralman, right winger Mike Blunden and center Jonathan Marchessault also scored for the (16-13-3) Lightning.
Flames 2, Predators 1 (OT): Defenseman Kris Russell scored in overtime to give the Calgary Flames their sixth straight win, 2-1 over the Nashville Predators.
Russell's second goal of the season upped the Flames to 14-14-2 and improved their record to 9-2 in games decided in overtime or a shootout.
Panthers 5, Islanders 1: Goalie Roberto Luongo recorded 33 saves, and five players scored a goal apiece for the Florida Panthers, who overcame a slow start to beat the New York Islanders 5-1.
Right winger Reilly Smith opened the scoring early in the second period for Florida (15-12-4).
Wild 6, Canucks 2: Left winger Thomas Vanek scored once and added three assists as the Minnesota Wild blasted past the Vancouver Canucks 6-2.
Results: Devils 2, Sabres 0; Blues 4, Jets 3.
