Chiefs ruin Packers' perfect season
Published in The Saudi Gazette on 20 - 12 - 2011

The Green Bay Packers suffered a shock 19-14 loss to the Kansas City Chiefs Sunday, shattering their hopes of a perfect season as three more teams joined them in the National Football League (NFL) playoffs.
The New England Patriots wrapped up the AFC East division with a 41-23 win over the Denver Broncos while the Pittsburgh Steelers and Baltimore Ravens both advanced, before their games had even kicked off, when other results went their way.
With just two weeks of the regular season left, seven of the 12 postseason berths have already been snapped up, setting up a mad scramble for the last five spots.
After winning 19 consecutive games, including last season's Super Bowl, the Packers were on the verge of a host of records when they slipped up against a struggling opponent that fired their coach and benched their quarterback in the past week.
But the Chiefs (6-8) overcame their own off-field problems to produce their best performance of the season in the first game under interim coach Romeo Crennel.
With new starting quarterback Kyle Orton throwing for 299 yards, Ryan Succop kicked four field goals and Jackie Battle scored the game-winning touchdown.
The Packers, who fell to 13-1 this season, badly missed injured receiver Greg Jennings and quarterback Aaron Rodgers was below his best, completing 17 of 35 passes for 235 yards while being sacked four times. The result denied the Packers a chance of joining the 1972 Miami Dolphins as the only teams to go through an entire season undefeated as well as spoiling their bid to break New England's 21-game win streak, set in 2003-04.
Quarterback Tom Brady's Patriots rallied to score 27 unanswered points as New England defeated the Denver Broncos 41-23 to clinch a post-season berth Sunday.
New England captured its ninth AFC East title in the past 11 years and snapped the Broncos' superb win streak of six straight games.
Brady completed 23 of 34 passes for 320 yards with two touchdown passes to help the Patriots rebound from a 17-6 deficit early on. Brady also ran for a touchdown.
In the night game, Philip Rivers threw for a touchdown and Ryan Mathews ran for two more as the San Diego Chargers kept their post-season hopes alive with a 34-14 win over Baltimore.
In another key game Sunday, Indianapolis Colts' quarterback Dan Orlovsky says he wasn't about to go through another 0-16 season.
The Colts beat Tennessee 27-13 Sunday to earn their first win of the season Sunday after losing the first 13 games with star quarterback Peyton Manning on the injured list.
Orlovsky, a seven-year veteran, was with Detroit in 2008 when the Lions finished 0-16 on the season. He tossed one touchdown pass against Tennessee.
It was the Colts' first win in 14 years without Peyton Manning, who the team said Sunday would not play at all this season.
In other games, it was New Orleans 42 Minnesota 20, Seattle 38 Chicago 14, Cincinnati 20 St. Louis 13, Carolina 28 Houston 13, Miami 30 Buffalo 23, Washington 23 N.Y. Giants 10, Arizona 20 Cleveland 17 and Philadelphia 45 New York Jets 20.
