Rangers remain on top
Published in The Saudi Gazette on 15 - 09 - 2011

David Murphy had a pair of solo home runs among his four hits and Josh Hamilton put the AL West-leading Texas Rangers ahead to stay with his 20th homer in a 10-4 victory over the Cleveland Indians Tuesday.
Murphy already had both of his homers, his 10th and 11th of the season, before Hamilton hit a scorching liner off Justin Masterson (11-10) into the right-center field seats by the Texas bullpen for a 4-2 lead in the fifth.
Adrian Beltre extended his hitting streak to 17 games, matching a career high, when he led off the seventh with a 411-foot blast.
Matt Harrison (12-9) gave up three runs on seven hits while pitching into the sixth inning in his first start in nine days. The left-hander struck out four and walked one.
Beltre's 24th homer of the season came as the first major league batter faced by right-hander Zach Putnam, who then gave up a double to Murphy and a run-scoring single to Mike Napoli before finally recording an out.
New York 3, Seattle 2: Mariano Rivera became the second pitcher in baseball history to reach 600 career saves as he put the finishing touches on the New York Yankees victory over the Seattle Mariners.
Rivera's 600th save puts him one behind Trevor Hoffman's Major League record and strengthens the reputation of a pitcher widely believed to be the greatest closer of all time.
Orioles 4, Rays 2: The Tampa Bay Rays got a double dose of disappointment at Camden Yards.
Blowing a late lead in a loss to the Baltimore Orioles was tough to take. Watching the scoreboard and seeing Boston pull away from Toronto made it even worse.
Tampa Bay led 2-1 in the sixth inning, but Baltimore tied it in the seventh and took control when Matt Wieters hit a two-run homer off J.P. Howell in eighth.
Evan Longoria homered for the Rays, whose five-game winning streak ended.
The loss dropped Tampa Bay four games behind the Red Sox in the AL wild-card race.
Red Sox 18, Blue Jays 6: Tim Wakefield earned his 200th win on his eighth try, Dustin Pedroia hit two homers in Boston's highest-scoring game of the season and the Red Sox ended a five-game losing streak with an rout of the Toronto Blue Jays.
Royals 4, Twins 0: Bruce Chen pitched eight crisp innings, Alex Gordon homered and the Kansas City Royals beat the Minnesota Twins.
Chen (11-7) allowed two singles, struck out eight and walked one. He was 0-2 with a 7.94 ERA in his previous two starts.
Other results: LA Angels 6, Oakland 3; Detroit 5, White Sox 0.
