West Brom, Blackburn earn 1st points in EPL
Published in The Saudi Gazette on 12 - 09 - 2011

West Bromwich Albion grabbed its first points of the season at the fourth time of asking with a 1-0 victory over promoted Norwich, while Fulham and Blackburn shared a 1-1 draw in the Premier League's other game Sunday.
Nigeria striker Peter Odemwingie pounced on a defensive error to clip home a third-minute winner at Carrow Road for West Brom, which climbed into midtable by ending a run of three straight defeats.
Blackburn also got off the mark in its fourth match of the campaign but was denied a win when England striker Bobby Zamora equalized for Fulham in the 37th minute with a sublime curling effort.
Spanish youngster Ruben Rochina had put Blackburn in front but the visitors remain bottom of the table.
Betis edges Mallorca
In Spain, Ruben Castro's late goal gave Real Betis a 1-0 win over Mallorca Sunday, while Osasuna continued its strong start to the Spanish league with a 2-1 victory over Sporting Gijon.
The Spanish striker was well-placed at the far post for his volley after a corner kick was unintentionally flicked on by a Mallorca defender in the 86th minute.
Betis had hit the woodwork three times in the first half and had various chances after the break at Benito Villamarin stadium in Seville.
It was Castro's second late winner in as many weeks as Betis maintained its perfect start to the season, lifting the promoted club to the top of the league standings along with Real Madrid and Valencia. Defending champion Barcelona is two points behind.
Always tough at Reyno de Navarra stadium, Osasuna dominated early en route to handing a lackluster Sporting its second straight loss.
Elsewhere, Levante couldn't take advantage of its extra man in the final 10 minutes after Racing Santander midfielder Papakouly Diop was sent off with two yellow cards and had to settle for a 0-0 away draw.
Zaragoza failed to bounce back from the 6-0 loss to Madrid in week one as it was held to a 0-0 draw by promoted Rayo Vallecano.
On Saturday, Karim Benzema scored a double as Madrid beat Getafe 4-2, while Barcelona squandered an early lead with a pair of defensive lapses that let Real Sociedad rally to a 2-2 draw.
Also, Roberto Soldado gave Valencia a 1-0 win over Atletico Madrid with his fourth goal of the season, and a 10-man Villarreal salvaged a 2-2 draw with Sevilla.
Wolfsburg beats Schalke 2-1
In Berlin, Mario Mandzukic scored twice as Wolfsburg came from behind to beat Schalke in the Bundesliga Sunday.
Mandzukic canceled out Raul Gonzalez's 13th minute opener with a header in the 33rd and the Croatian secured Wolfsburg's first win after three losses when he scored again in the 82nd.
Earlier, Timmy Simons scored two penalties in four minutes to give 10-man Nuremberg a 2-1 win at Cologne.
