Cyber crime is a newly-generated type of crime that has become more common these days with the rapid development of technology. The criminals are likewise both intelligent and educated, who can conceal their real identity and commit crimes without being caught. It is our role as educators to teach the youth about Internet ethics and intellectual rights in order to prepare a knowledgeable generation that knows how to protect themselves and others over the Internet. High school level students are at a particularly sensitive point in life at the onset of puberty, when emotions are running high, physical changes are taking place and the school curriculum is becoming much more challenging. To add to all this stress and pressure are the added challenges that socializing and surfing the Internet bring. With these children being given more independence from their parents, there is a dangerous mix of the lack of parental involvement and a desire to experiment with boundaries. Teachers and parents should monitor children and provide a clear picture to them about the kind of things they can in a virtual world. They should also make sure that children feel comfortable reporting crimes they witness or are victims of. Nadine Awadalla

The Internet is certainly one of the most fascinating aspects of our daily life. We wake up in the morning, read the news online, update Facebook and/or Twitter, and maybe read a few blogs while we're at it. However, benign social networking, browsing, and surfing are not what everyone uses the Internet for. Cyber crime is becoming an increasingly common activity online. Cyber crime includes major bank robberies, national security threats, cyber stalking, selling counterfeit merchandise, and downloading pirated music, amongst others. People think that if they do commit a certain cyber crime, they are untraceable. That is obviously untrue, so to avoid falling into the traps cyber criminals set for you, make sure to only buy items from trusted websites, never give out your personal information to anyone online, and look out for scams and deals that look entirely too good to be true. In the age of advanced technology and ever-developing gadgets, all kinds of criminals and techno-addicts have got even more mediums to carry out their illegal deeds. Hacking, identity theft and breaches of security are just the tip of the iceberg of the many unlawful acts that such people commit. Authentication issues should be seriously dealt with and cyber criminals must be punished.
