The dangerous Warning!
Al-Riyadh Editorial
Published in Alriyadh on 12 - 02 - 2014

ARAMCO: Continued Growth in energy consumption rate per capita in the Kingdom is regarded as dangerous.
This news published in yesterday's newspaper may not move any mentality which considers that any artistic or sporty news are more important than it. This subject is not really new as some specialists in Oil Economy & General Economy had discussed it earlier. Even Danger indicators have warned that we shall be among oil importers rather than exporters within two decades. We are a country of one resource and draining that resource means that the coming generations will be recalling its memory only. This is not a pessimistic view as when the company in charge of discovering it, exporting it and keeping its reserves warns about such future; we shall be facing a situation which cannot be handled through carelessness in regard to rationalizing / conserving the uncontrolled consumption. There is the alternative energy project before us in spite of that it is suffering the slow procedures problem. As long as it is still in its starts, have we drawn rapid strategies for reduction or for stopping the unlimited draining of our oil?
This extravagance is not restricted to oil only as there are other resources such as water, food and destruction of desert & marine environments. We need to realize that the "Gee & Honey Years" may not last for long unless the high official and the citizen have the same level of responsibility in regard to protecting our various fortunes.
It is known that we are importing whatever stuff that increases energy consumption such as cars of finished lifespan and electric tools which are contrary to the specifications. Air conditioners importers, themselves, admitted that there are 850 000 units which are not compatible with energy efficiency standards, regardless of what have been destroyed by the state of which some have been smuggled to some houses, companies and commercial shops. This puts us before the same problem related to monitoring role in regard to Customs and Consumer Protection Departments. This principle applies on the other imported materials where the traders and merchants are wasting our material and oil fortunes as long as the supervisor cannot realize such excesses or sets some penalties which are proportional with their social and economic damages.
We are not able to recognize or see any authority in charge of discovering the gasoline, diesel and other oil derivatives smuggling gangs and exposing their unfair behavior which is contrary to the simplest concepts of nationalism and adherence with commercial business morals and ethics. Another issue is related to the neighboring countries which have exploited our cheap oil through their various cars which jeep coming in and getting out of our country in a way that doubles such consumption, in addition to the unusual practice of that expatriates are using cars and equipment which are out of service. It may be that the raised point, in this regard, is that raising the prices shall harm the citizen. This is logical but still limited as the numbers issued about the citizen's annual consumption talk about 40 barrels as a general estimation. However, if we add the number of nine or ten millions of expatriates, we shall conclude that there is a big problem here. Some parties suggested raising the prices and using their returns in housing, employment and other aids that we consider as more feasible than cheap oil price for a family that owns one or two cars only in an owned or rented house which area does not exceed 200 square meters as such model represents the majority of our society population.
Foreseeing the future needs drawing a long term strategy and looking for alternatives that should not be blocked by the stagnant or bureaucratic decisions as our race with time in regard to doubling the energy consumption shall put us before the inevitable biggest danger. We do not believe that the decision maker does not realize the coming dangers but we need someone who sees the reality and handles or treats it through decisions that take the reasonable limits into account due to that the alarm came from ARAMCO which has a vast experience of dealing with oil policy &knows that its speech addresses the various governmental and national authorities for stating that we are on the ship that we do not want to be the reason behind its sinking.
