Intensive visits to the region ... why?!
Al-Riyadh Editorial
Published in Alriyadh on 10 - 11 - 2012

There is a diplomatic movement led by the French President Holland who visited Lebanon & G. C. C. countries followed by the visits of the British Prime Minister David Cameron who visited many countries, including G. C. C. countries. Meanwhile, the visit of the Russian Minister of Exterior to Cairo & Oman which may be followed by visits to other countries has been concurrent with the mentioned visits of Holland & Cameron.
In the said visits, commercial and military deals have been held, putting into consideration the cases of Syria & Iran which are deemed the hottest, in spite of that the events of the region have never been cool (I. e. stable or peaceful) since 1948, which represented the Catastrophe of Palestine, until the present moment.
We still remember that the countries which caused the maximum number of changes, led the wars and tore the lands of the Arab homeland at that time were Britain & France. However, due to the changes caused by time and their return to their limited States' borders; the United States and the Soviet Union assumed together the leadership of the cold and hot wars where the Arabs have been divided between the East and the West and many things had changed.
There is no doubt that the interests of Europe, especially France & Britain, increased after the recession of their colonial roles as they returned to the economic and commercial exchanges and entered the global competition of arms export. However, their political balance have decreased in spite of their presence in Security council as permanent members due to that the United States has become the train head since then until now. Meanwhile, they have become, since then, mere supportive factors in regard to solving or complicating any situation in the region and out of it.
The Russian presence couldn't keep its strong presence the way it had been during the time of the Soviet Union. Except for Syria and few arming links with some Arab countries; we do not realize that Russia represents a distinguished power due to that it has become busy in many internal issues that were about to blow everything, including the Russian Federation itself. Meanwhile, Russia is trying to enter the new formula where such try is represented by strengthening itself through an ally with the rising Chinese Power. In spite of Interests contradiction between these two countries, they managed to become a binary power in Security Council in regard to what's going on in Syria.
In regard to commerce with the Arab countries, China represents a big power that it managed to preserve in spite of its bias and siding with the Syrian regime. However, China is different from Russia in that it kept being a mere political bolster to the Syrian regime without (providing it with) a military support. The said feature caused China to be distinguished as it left the window open. Meanwhile, Russia realized that that the Syrian regime has entered into a foggy stage where it has become difficult to predict its future and decide whether it will manage to survive or not. Accordingly, the Russian Minister of Exterior Lavrov started his try of rebuilding its country's relations through declarations instead of concessions as he started to realize that it is necessary to change the overwhelming opinion of that Russia is against the whole Arab trend. The said realizations pushed Lavrov towards meeting with G. C. C. Ministers of Exterior in spite of such trend has never been a stable trend in the Russian policy which has been, most of the times, a basic supporter for Iran in spite of its realization of Iran's conflict with G. C. C. countries.
However, this shouldn't prohibit us from listening to The Russian voice if it has some (useful) thing to say, away from the exposed diplomatic game, provided that it is based on logic and common interests as the time of Cold war had gone & Arab countries have become out of the old polarization. Russia's ability of participating in solving the Syrian crisis shall save it from creating a problem with the region's countries, putting into consideration that Russia, no doubt, is a super power that can be on the side of the Syrian people's right, instead of being against it.
