Domestic labor or ... the chronic headache!!
Al-Riyadh's Editorial
Published in Alriyadh on 06 - 07 - 2012

The discussuion about the foreign labor has exceeded the articles and reached the stage of studies, the extent of their influence on the social & cultural structures, the conflicts of traditions & habits, the problems of sickness and the change of values until the end of the long chain of complications that dominated our community.
According to their interwined relationship with the family they work for; the domestic laborers represent the party which is the biggest explorer of the details of our personal life. As every made had her bad economic conditions that forced her to immigrate to work regions; she may enter into the house with some doubt and fear but she becomes a part of the normal nature of the family with the passage of time. However, some cases rise and spoils the relationship between the two parties of the labor contract. Such problems occur, mostly, due to the temptations of either theft or revenge for some reasons. If we consider the percentage of excesses committed either by the Saudi citizens or by the foreign maids and how they become reasons for cases with the embassies and mother countries of these maids, where the matters are shown in a way that does not match their reality; we shall find that the exaggeration exceeded the truth.
This does not mean that the behavior of some saudi families is good when they do not pay the salary of the maid for months or treat here in an inhuman way that pushes her towards the revenge, as this sort of behavior is not a phenomenon anymore. However, when a murderer, a child abuser or a thief is judged by the court here; the press in the lawbreakers' countries derive such news from our media and publish them in a general way that concerns every worker or maid of their nationality. This failure of our media and the embassies of these countries, as well, led to blocking the provision from some countries which requests had become excessive and related to our families privacy life. This is contradictory to the systems and contracts made with neighboring G. C. C. countries.
I know many people whose generosity with these laborers was big. One person discovered that his maid is suffering from cancer and he accepted to bear the costs of her therapy which was SR 40 000. Another person's driver had a deep vein thrombosis and a place in a private hospital was reserved for him where the cost that reached many thousands was endured by his employer. There are many other similar cases, too. There are gifts and transfers for the poor families of the maids which constitute an extra burden added to the salary. When a maid intendsw tohave her annual leave, the family which sympathizes deeply with her provides her with a lot of purchases that fill many bags. However, such humanitarian side vanishes in the case of any criminal case, whether caused by the saudi employer or the other party (the maid or worker). In most cases, such case covers the charitable deed.
There is a mutual interest between the two parties of the realtionship but the (contradicting) laws and regulations of the country of origin and the country of residence cause the failure in most cases. The employer may be the looser when his worker or maid runs a way. This case has become a burden borne by the saudi citizen due to the failure in applying the systems or regulations. It is a complicated issue which traces are still existed until now.
