Contemplations on stealing
Published in Alriyadh on 31 - 07 - 2011

"How poor are thefts of the old days" We always say where are we from the past.
Where is Atayef road that we used to imagine that is impossible to develop from the reality of King Fahad's road that was jammed with cars and with its long distances, or what will be King Abdulla's road like with multiple transportation ways and rest places and branching out to new neighborhoods?
How were we happy about the elementary school for girls and now we are impressed with the multiple women academies and the multiple leading existences also of the woman?
We changed from pure nomadism where the man or woman would look as if they are looking from behind a red glass because of the unavailability of a medicine and the usage of crimson, which is a red liquid that no body knows anything about it other than its color.
We jumped long and vast distances. I remember seeing some Saudis around fifty years ago when I was in the beginnings of my middle school who were eating the watermelon peels rather than being concerned with its red part.
This is off course faraway from being true because people didn't know any fruit back then other than watermelon where they called it "Jeh", where in vegetables they mostly knew what is known as pumpkin, and the men would not eat whatever he sees looking like the food of the cattle. We thank god, for us jumping a big step forward, both socially and economically. Our country didn't know the harshness of relations or the struggles of wars, but it really irritated me that we experience a developing aspect of practicing theft. Our old thief used to steal what is in your pockets or makes a funny move when jumping from one jump to another and gets stuck while trying to run away and thus gets arrested, and all what he stolen would not reach to one hundred Riyals.
I met two men in Dubai of the dark skin in front of a bookseller where they were talking a foreign language, they greeted me, I asked them where are they from? They mentioned a name of an African non-Arab country, and one of them requested my mobile number so that we communicate since we are Muslims, as he said. With goodwill I gave him my number, and on the next day I received a text message from a specific European country saying that I won one million, four hundred and fifty thousand Pounds, which is more than ten million Riyals. I was shocked, I asked some colleagues and friends and they said don't get happy, or actually don't get involved, because this is a developed set up style that gives you this text message and then asks for your account number to deposit your money, but what will happen is that they will withdraw all what is in your bank account.
I asked: don't you see that all what we have developed but stealing? And this is, socially, great.
One of them said: true, when we apply it on the traditional thief in which poverty will motivate him to take a risk, but there are some steals that don't fall under this name and there are some of the ones that practice it considers his fall back in performing it a fault in the ambition or in the quality of performance.
