Divided yet in harmony
Published in Alriyadh on 07 - 06 - 2011

Many Arab and foreign authors and intellectuals spoke and wrote about our multiple social, mental, financial and spiritual crises and how we pulled a curtain to cover ourselves from interacting with the global development. Intellectuals and academics in the Arab world, being the pioneers of the society, are at sharp differences. The regrettable is that the link between them is to destroy each other's success. This extends as far as to other leaders in the communist, liberal and religious leaders when each category twists facts to suit their needs and to add more to party intolerance. This is why the social consensus faded away replacing a spontaneous and free dialogue which gives the right to those who have the upper hand to convince others, or indeed make the doubts prevail.
There is a long history of splits among Arabs. They have differences on the Palestinian issue. It has been support by all but in the interest of their party, organization and State. The result was a split between the "retroactive imperialism Arab countries camp" and the "liberation, progressive and freedom eastern camp". While leaders of both camps have naively fought wars on behalf of those camp's benefits during the cold war.
In this atmosphere repressive powers prevailed, and established a ring of followers, clients and companions based on unique mutual interests and harmony. Freedom and justice became logos of the State remain unfulfilled. This situation resulted in permanent people servile so that those who dare to talk, or even whisper, becomes the enemy of the State. The result was the migration of skilled people, capitals and the persecution of those who criticize the situation openly. This prompted the social elite to either keep silent or submit to the Authority. We have seen the truth about top movie stars, intellectuals and artists unfolding through the Arab uprisings when the secret files revealed precedents. This led them to retroversion and long-term isolation. The Arab and the Islamic world tested turbans, fezzes, Paris and Rome fashioned people and all those who assumed the role that tempts others. Truth, however, unveiled by the era of modern young people rallies that broke through barriers with tools authorities cannot stop or block. This action has destroyed the image of the terrifying regimes and broke the barrier of fear only to reveal the truth of a rather weak regimes. Relying on equivocation and promises, while the regime is searching for a way out through dialogue, has diverted the course of the conflict. Therefore, the more concessions by the regime the higher the demands as the new player entered the arena armed with new tools that stripped down the image of the regime.
The frightening scenario of the leaders clinching to their seats is the emergence of Islamic enclaves or states of national and ethnic minorities. This case was evident in Yemen when Al-Qaeda declared the emirate of Zanzibar. A situation considered complicity of power by the opposition to frighten the world of what it considered a security vacuum and chaos.
