Why would the CNN interview terrorist figures?
Published in Alriyadh on 01 - 02 - 2011

Actually, it is not the CNN who only host terrorist figures to talk about their support to the mass murders that took place in different places, and emphasize their support to the upcoming terrorist acts. The strange thing is that interviewers have expressed reluctance throughout these interviews as though they were expecting something else.
The last discussion was with Anjem Coudary who resides in Britain during an interview hosted by the famous journalist Fareed Zakaria on CNN. He even started without greeting, which indicated that his words lacked any legitimacy. Addressing the viewers, he said at the beginning "we listen about Jidadists in America but we don't see them talking as in London" considering that as an opportunity to talk to them.
A stressful dialogue then began where the interviewer attempted to convince the guest of the futility of killing innocents. He ended the interview with rage expressed on his face because of all the justifications provided by the guest. Again, what would the interview expect other than repeating such offenses!
In another program on the CNN as well, almost the same scenario was repeated with one only difference when the interviewer - and former mayor of New York Eliot Spitzer - told the guest that he was a brutal terrorist and must be prosecuted.
The question here is why do these channel do that?! It is insane for anybody to show up and announce that he is happy for the scenes of blood inside trains and on the streets. This is extremely insane and no chance should be given to start a dialogue with such people in the first place. When the discussion turns to talks about blasts, killing, and beheading, any dialogue about the rights of expression would be fruitless. What professionalism is anticipated by CNN and other networks from a person who says that he want to see the Islam flags over the white house! And that all Muslims support terrorism even if they have expressed the opposite.
In fact, even in comparison to Bin Laden's speeches, and in spite of their ugly implied messages, they do not go to shocking details which are repeated by those Jihadists. Then, why would these TVs do that?! The reason is that these networks seek to steal the spot light and acquire a wider viewer's base even by trespassing professional limits. The biggest problem is that when this irresponsible obsession causes an increase in the viewers' number, the situation – already stressed - will become more stressful.
Muslims themselves suffer from the radical culture which founded the grounds for all these terrorists, and which accounts for more death tolls on the Muslims part than on others. It is good to discuss this culture and the argument related to it, and that what actually happens on Arabic and foreign TVs. However, it becomes different when what would spread horror and give imbalanced people the opportunity to cause fear and suspicion towards Muslims everywhere. This is in fact what terrorists are willing to. And unfortunately, that is what the western media also wants, but for marketing purposes. It is really unfortunate that such thing is done by a respectful station as the CNN who play a significant role in defending moderation and rationalism.
