United Nations experts said gold has become the commodity of choice for armed groups in volatile eastern Congo, partly because traders in the region buy it without asking questions, AP reported. The U.N. group of experts on Congo notes there is "almost no due diligence oversight" of the region's gold sector. The findings of the report for the United Nations Security Council were made public over the weekend. The experts say that despite numerous testimonies that nearly all gold produced in Ituri district and North Kivu province of eastern Congo is exported to Uganda. A 2009 report published by the Congolese senate estimated that 40 tons of gold were smuggled out of Congo each year.
