An abridged guide to Saudi policy
Published in The Saudi Gazette on 26 - 01 - 2021

WHILE important political events, twists and turns are taking place, we need an official discourse that clarifies the facts and positions and removes ambiguity and speculation.
Whatever may be the endeavors of the concerned observers, they are not entirely the reliable ones in the end. It is imperative that the officials should go out to the public to put points in letters and define official positions on the issues raised.
Therefore, we need interviews similar to the one that the Al-Arabiya channel had conducted with Saudi Foreign Minister Prince Faisal Bin Farhan last Friday evening, during which he talked about important files at an important period of time.
There were questions by some observers pertaining to some of these files that are of importance and pivotal to the Kingdom, in view of the fact that the Kingdom's positions would exercise influence on their courses and paths.
For example, we were looking forward to statements regarding developments in Saudi-American relations with the new Democratic Administration and what is being raised about the happenings in the Arab world during the two terms of Democratic President Barack Obama, or disrupting the relative rapprochement that came into being during the period of the Trump Administration.
We need to know the official position regarding important regional files such as Yemen, Iraq, Iran, Turkey, and Lebanon, as well as the file of reconciliation with Qatar and its circumstances and some details that observers are eager to know about the AlUla agreement.
These also include the file of Arabs' normalization of ties with Israel and other files in which the local, regional and international are intertwined.
It was a very useful interview despite its short duration. In a concise but elaborate, clear, and direct diplomatic language, the foreign minister was able to define the general orientation of Saudi policy toward these files, and its positions and vision toward them.
The minister affirmed the calm and balanced nature of the Saudi diplomacy, as well as its wisdom and farsightedness, and adherence to principles that it is keen to uphold.
The interview was like a roadmap for the Saudi policy directed to all those who want to know its nature and its orientations with what is happening now, and it was capable of answering many important questions. And perhaps this will be a guide for those who do not know well the nature of the Saudi policy.
