Number of divorces surpasses marriages in Kuwait during coronavirus lockdowns
Published in The Saudi Gazette on 03 - 08 - 2020

KUWAIT CITY — Coronavirus is turning out to be a curse for the marital life in Kuwait as divorce numbers surpassed marriages for the first time in the month of July, Arab Times, an English-language newspaper, reported on Monday.
According to the report, statistics issued by the country's legal documentation department the month of July showed 818 divorces, compared to 622 marriages, which means 4 divorces for every 3 marriages.
The rise in divorce rates can be attributed to marital problems resulting from prolonged lockdowns imposed in the country due to the outbreak of the coronavirus pandemic, experts were quoted as saying in the report.
The financial problems caused by the pandemic led tempers to flare inside homes over silly issues and this greatly affected marital relations, the report added.
The report also said that there were few marriages and this was also due to the coronavirus restrictions on social gatherings to prevent the spread of the virus.
The daily added that many couples were reluctant to tie the knot without the presence of their friends and families as they clung to the hope that life would return to normal in the country soon.
The high rates of divorce and the drop in marriage cases do not necessarily mean there is an increase in divorces, but rather this scenario has unfolded due to the exceptional conditions that the country and the whole world are currently experiencing as a result of the outbreak of the virus, which is nothing more than a decline in marriage cases rather than an increase in divorce cases, the report said citing some other experts.
The statistics showed that Kuwait's Department of Sharia Documentation completed during the period from June 30 until the current July 28, 13,947 transactions, the most prominent of which are 205 marriage permit contracts by an authorized person outside the administration (a non- Kuwaiti party).
