Published in The Saudi Gazette on 18 - 01 - 2020

NEW YORK — Ambassador Abdullah Al-Muallami, permanent representative of Saudi Arabia to the United Nations, affirmed that Saudi Arabia would strive, through its presidency of the G20, to achieve the stability and prosperity of the global economy.
"During the presidency, the Kingdom will enhance cooperation and find international consensus on the economic issues that may be raised. It will also work to develop effective policies to achieve sustainable and balanced development and create real opportunities to raise living standards and well-being of the peoples of the world," he said.
Al-Muallami made the remarks while addressing the meeting of the Group of 77 and China at the United Nations headquarters in New York on Friday evening. He thanked Minister Dr. Riyad Mansour, permanent observer of the State of Palestine, for successfully leading the delegation of his country while chairing the Group of 77 and China in 2019.
He praised the important and exceptional role that the State of Palestine played in defending the issues of the countries of the group and negotiating on its behalf in various fields. He also commended the role of Palestine in achieving the goals of the group and preserving the spirit of cooperation among its members.
"Palestine's presidency of the group coincided with a phase during which there has been an accelerated developmental and environmental challenges for the economies of developing countries," he pointed out.
Al-Muallami congratulated Guyana on taking over the presidency of the group for this year.
"Today, we all face a changing global scene due to the rapid changes technically, economically and environmentally that constitute common challenges for our group, and in light of these challenges, international cooperation has become an urgent necessity to confront them.
"In this scenario, Saudi Arabia believes in the effectiveness of multilateral action to reach consensus and create opportunities for all, and the Group of 77 and China have many opportunities to enhance cooperation to take it to new horizons and enact sustainable economic policies to ensure that no one is left behind," he said.
Al-Muallami said the Kingdom, through its participation as an active member of the group and its commitment to achieve its goals, is working to serve as a solid bridge for communication between partner countries and developing countries.
Meanwhile, Al-Muallami met the newly appointed permanent representative of Libya to UN Ambassador Taher Al-Sunni at his office in New York. They reviewed the bilateral relations between the two countries and discussed issues of mutual concern, in addition to the latest political developments.
