MADINAH — The light festival, which was organized to mark the selection of Madinah as the Islamic tourism capital for 2017, has attracted more than 138,000 people, 42 percent of them foreigners, in the past few days. The festival was launched on the first day of Eid Al-Fitr. Khaled Al-Shahrani, secretary of the Madinah Tourism Development Council and spokesman for the festival, said the tourism council approved the event as part of its annual programs to mark the selection of Madinah as the capital of Islamic tourism and woo tourists. "We have organized the event with the support of international event management experts," Al-Shahrani told Makkah Arabic daily. "The festival is the first of its kind in Madinah and reflected the glittering Islamic city's culture and heritage," he pointed out. He said the festival has been drawing a large number of visitors including foreign pilgrims and tourists. The festival will continue until Friday. He called upon all Madinah people to visit and enjoy the festival. "It's one of the best events witnessed by Madinah," Al-Shahrani said. The festival's activities are held at four different locations: Hejaz Railway station, the Water Tower, the municipality building and the gateway of Madinah on Hijrah Road.
