Incessant rain triggered by the approaching tropical cyclone Phet lashed the coastal areas of Pakistan's southern Baluchistan province on Saturday, as authorities raced against time to move people to safer areas. The cyclone is expected to make landfall near the commercial hub of Karachi and in the nearby province of Baluchistan on Sunday with "maximum sustained winds of 100 to 120 kilometres per hour," dpa quoted Pakistan's Meteorological Department (PMD) as saying. The rain, part of a weather pattern caused by the storm, has already wreaked havoc in the Gwadar district of Baluchistan. That area had seen a record 326 millimeters of rainfall since midnight, causing flooding in the main city and in a dozen nearby villages, the PMD reported Saturday.
