The Israeli military said Thursday it filed an indictment against an officer involved in the shooting of an unarmed Palestinian and the commandeering of a taxi in the West Bank last month, according to dpa. The officer, a lieutenant, is accused of several serious offences including aggravated assault and wrongful imprisonment. The indictment alleges that the officer ordered his soldiers to steal a Palestinian taxi in the West Bank town of Dahariya in order to conduct an unauthorized undercover operation. The stolen taxi's driver was held blindfolded and handcuffed on the floor of the vehicle for the length of the soldiers' drive through the town. When they finished, they abandoned the taxi with the driver still tied up inside. The officer indicted is accused of also driving the stolen vehicle. During the operation, of which no superior officer was informed, one of the soldiers shot an unarmed Palestinian civilian. They then abandoned him wounded on the ground and did not offer medical attention, the indictment charged. The officer is also accused of a cover-up and he allegedly ordered the soldiers not to speak of the incident. The Israeli military Court Martial ordered the officer detained until his trial is completed and said that the "actions of the accused seriously endangered the lives of the soldiers, his own life and the lives of the local population."
