The number of people fleeing rumbling Mount Agung in the island of Bali's Karangsem district has reached 34,931 as of midday Sunday, an official has reported. "We expect the number to rise, as many still remain unaccounted for and some even have fled out of Bali," said Sutopo Purwo Nugroho, a spokesman for Indonesia's National Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB). The displaced are being sheltered in 238 evacuation centres in Karangasem district as well as in neighbouring Badung, Bangli, Buleleng, Gianyar, Denpasar, Klungkung districts on the resort island. He said the number of people in the shelters has fluctuated since many often risk returning to their homes during the day to tend to their livestock, many of which remain in the potential volcano area due to lack of space and adequate shelter for animals in the evacuation centres. He said there will be a special team from the local husbandry agency to handle the livestock's evacuation.
