PARIS: A man has died after his car was hit by another car taking part in the Dakar rally in Argentina, organizers said Thursday. “The accident happened 30km from the exit of the (day's) leg at 0610 local time,” Amaury Sport Organization said in a statement. It said the 48-year-old “was brought to the Tinogasta hospital, where he unfortunately died”. The Dakar rally has been regularly affected by accidents. Last year, a woman watching the race died after being hit by a vehicle taking part in the event. The rally started on Jan. 1 from Buenos Aires and will end on Jan. 16 in the Argentine capital following a two-week trip to Argentina and Chile. Sainz runs up white flag Spain's defending champion Carlos Sainz has all but conceded defeat in his bid to retain the Dakar Rally title after losing nearly 10 minutes on his teammate and main rival Nasser Al-Attiyah. Sainz had got back into contention by winning Tuesday but Wednesday was a disaster in a stage won by South African Giniel de Villiers, driving like Sainz and Al-Attiyah a Volkswagen. “If Nasser doesn't make a mistake, then it is over,” admitted Sainz.
