Federer earns 1st clay win of season

Roger Federer captured his first singles win of the season on clay by beating Bjorn Phau of Germany 6-3, 6-4 at the Estoril Open Wednesday.
The world No. 1 conceded just 17 points on his service game as he rebounded from a first-round loss in Rome last week.
Federer will meet Arnaud Clement of France in the quarterfinals. Federer won the Estoril crown in 2008 but skipped last year's event.
Fourth-seeded Albert Montanes, the defending champion, ousted fellow Spaniard Daniel Gimeno-Traver 6-1, 6-2 and next encounters eighth-seeded Pablo Cuevas. The Uruguayan overcame Marcel Granollers of Spain 7-6 (8), 7-6 (2).
Second-seeded Sorana Cirstea of Romania advanced in the women's event, triumphing 7-5, 7-5 over Michelle Larcher de Brito of Portugal.
Fourth-seeded Anabel Medina Garrigues of Spain and seventh-seeded Peng Shuai of China also went through.
Williams sisters in quarters
Top-ranked Serena Williams reached the Italian Open quarterfinals in her first tournament in three months after defeating Andrea Petkovic of Germany 6-2, 3-6, 6-0 Wednesday.
Older sister Venus Williams ousted Shahar Peer of Israel 6-3, 6-4. However, second-ranked Caroline Wozniacki of Denmark lost her third-round match to Maria Jose Martinez Sanchez of Spain 6-4, 6-2, and eighth-seeded Agnieszka Radwanska of Poland was ousted by Czech player Lucie Safarova, who rallied to win 1-6, 6-3, 7-6 (1).
Serena next plays Maria Kirilenko of Russia, who defeated Dominika Cibulkova of Slovakia 4-6, 6-1, 6-1.
Venus will meet Jelena Jankovic, who rolled to a 6-2, 6-0 victory over Yanina Wickmayer of Belgium.
Nadia Petrova of Russia won 6-0, 3-6, 6-2 against Alexandra Dulgheru of Romania.
Cilic advances
Top-seeded Marin Cilic of Croatia downed Michael Berrer of Germany 6-4, 6-2 at the BMW Open Wednesday.
Defending champion Tomas Berdych of the Czech Republic reached the quarterfinals by defeating Spanish qualifier Pere Riba 7-5, 6-1. Mikhail Youzhny of Russia beat Andreas Beck of Germany 6-3, 6-3.
Jan Hajek of the Czech Republic made the first quarterfinals by defeating Benjamin Becker of Germany, 6-4, 6-0.
Philipp Kohlschreiber ousted German compatriot Daniel Brands 6-4, 6-4,, and Nicolas Almagro of Spain beat Kristof Vliegen of Belgium 6-3, 6-1.
Querrey, Andreev win
Third-seeded Sam Querrey of the United States and Igor Andreev of Russia have advanced to the quarterfinals of the Serbia Open.
Querrey defeated Evgeny Korolev of Russia 6-3, 6-4 Wednesday, while Andreev ousted fifth-seeded Ivo Karlovic of Croatia 6-4, 7-5.
Fourth-seeded Stanislas Wawrinka of Switzerland beat Alessio Di Mauro of Italy 6-1, 6-4, and sixth-seeded Viktor Troicki of Servbia crushed Florent Serra of France 6-0 6
